Soup Raiders Goes Native: What You Gain by Building Your Own Game Engine | Elias Farhan

https://eliasfarhan.ch/gamedev/cpp/2026/08/14/srnative-01-why-a-custom-engine.html
This post grew far beyond my original idea, but I wanted to set out my thoughts on building a custom engine before delving into the technology itself. Building an engine takes time, but it gives us control over how the game loads and updates, removes engine-licence fees, and teaches us about asset compilation, rendering, and optimisation. We can even expose parts of the engine to players, allowing them to improve the game or create mods (and potentially entirely new games) with our technology. After Unity’s runtime-fee announcement, technological independence became an even more important concern for game developers.

Converting a PS4 Persona 5 Royal NG+ Save to Steam with Adversarial Interoperability

https://blog.matthewbrunelle.com/converting-a-ps4-persona-5-royal-ng-save-to-steam-with-adversarial-interoperability/
Persona 5 Royal was 80% off on Steam recently and as I already established, I will repeatedly pay Atlus for their games. Only problem is I don't want to start a full play through yet again. Thankfully we have adversarial interoperability.

But last weekend, while I was running my monthly ‘Storm King’s Thunder’ D&D campaign, I asked one of the group to help me get the dryer down from the shelf. Immediately the group set to work removing the back panel and trying to figure out what was wrong with it, while still playing D&D.

World historic amounts of gamedev talent thrown out to rot – Laura Michet's Blog

https://blog.lauramichet.com/world-historic-amounts-of-gamedev-talent-thrown-out-to-rot/
There is a never-before-seen glut of experienced, highly senior talent just lying around right now, like cuts of meat someone threw out of the fridge to rot on the floor of the restaurant. Game dev teams don't get birthed as fully-formed agglomerations of talent... it takes years for them to come together as effective creative communities and start making material they can be proud of. So we're looking at an industry that's not only hemorrhaging talent, but also hemorrhaging the interpersonal trust and momentum you need to make good games.

Correlated randomness in Slay the Spire 2 - Andy Tockman

https://tck.mn/blog/correlated-randomness-sts2/
Briefly, in Spire 1, the game used several distinct pseudorandom number generators, to prevent e.g. randomness within a combat from influencing future card rewards. However, they were all initialized to the same starting state, which meant they produced the same sequence of numbers. A crafty player could therefore pay attention to the results of past random events and gain information about future random events.

How the Vectrex game console sunk a 124-year-old company - The Silicon Underground

On May 4, 1984, Milton Bradley, a leading producer of board games for 124 years, agreed to sell itself to Hasbro. Changes in the way people played games in the 80s, especially kids, put pressure on the company. In this blog post, I’ll explain how changing times led Milton Bradley to make a transformational bet at the worst possible time that ultimately sunk the maker of the game Battleship, and what happened to what was left of Milton Bradley.

NetHack 5.0 is an enhancement to the dungeon exploration game NetHack, which is a distant descendent of Rogue and Hack, and a direct descendent of NetHack 3.6. ... A list of over 3100 fixes and changes can be found in the game's sources in the file doc/fixes5-0-0.txt. The text in there was written for the development team's own use and is provided "as is". Some entries might be considered "spoilers", particularly in the "new features" section.

The Legend of Zelda Map - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld

https://makerworld.com/en/models/539128-the-legend-of-zelda-map#profileId-456377
A 3D map of The Legend of Zelda. I still remember unfolding this map in the first Nintendo Power and being amazed. I tried to capture as much detail as I could while designing this for a 0.4mm nozzle to keep the print time down. The 1 AMS version proved pretty challenging, but I wanted to be able to share this with as many of you as I could. The overall size without the frame comes out to about 420mm x 140mm.

The Anatomy of an Impossible Port: Bringing Dead Cells to the R36S

https://gardinerbryant.com/the-anatomy-of-an-impossible-port/
In its final form, Dead Cells runs at roughly 25 frames per second on the R36S, fitting into about 400MB of resident memory. It boots, plays, and remains stable. The lighting is gone, but the pixel art carries itself. After a few rooms, it simply feels like Dead Cells. That original feasibility rating said “Low”, but it didn’t account for bmdhacks, stubbornness and time.

Netrunner – Convolution BBS

https://convolutionbbs.org/netrunner-2/
Finally, an online ‘cyberpunk’ game that comes close to portraying computing as depicted in classic cyberpunk works like Neuromancer by William Gibson. In this game the player is a NetRunner, an arrogant and bold futuristic hacker. Armed with his cyberdeck and an arsenal of offensive, defensive and analysis software he’s ready to invade corporate systems in the grid and raid their credits, for fame and fortune! It’s no cakewalk though! Waiting for the unwary are Intrusion Counter-measures (IC). Machine controlled defenses that can inflict damage to hardware and software, steal the players own credits and even cause… death.

Warframe Mandascore

Adventure 751 (1980) | Renga in Blue

https://bluerenga.blog/2026/01/01/adventure-751-1980/
Adventure 751 has been, by my reckoning, the most sought-after variation of Crowther/Woods Adventure. It was generally available on the online portal CompuServe from nearly the beginning of the service and it disappeared when they shut down their games in the 90s. Arthur O’Dwyer started a web page in 2012 (with semi-regular updates!) dedicated to hunting down a copy. To finish off a wild 2025 in game preservation, Arthur O’Dwyer announced the game has been found (by LanHawk, a regular amongst the comments here) and is playable.

Our arcade games are wonderful examples of living traditions (to use Mansfield’s term), and so we approach their conservation in the same philosophical way. We haven’t replaced the CRT in our Pac-Man yet, and perhaps we never will, but the key principle is to preserve these incredible machines, as ethically as we can, as living traditions.

Celebrate the fictitious 35th anniversary of Ruin, a faux point-and-click adventure game that never was | Rock Paper Shotgun

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/celebrate-the-fictitious-35th-anniversary-of-ruin-a-faux-point-and-click-adventure-game-that-never-was
The actual game in question here is Ruin: Chapter 0, an interactive fiction game in the stylings of something you might have seen on the ZX Spectrum, albeit with a lot more flair. And, perhaps, a lot more glitches - a big flashing imagery warning is needed for this one. Playable within your browser, it's kind of hard to describe what you do, or even what you're doing, in Ruin. From what I can gather, you are a knight, the hero of rune, tasked by the king to retrieve a sword and defeat evil forever. But no matter what, I just keep getting my ass kicked by this evil, and every time I die it just says "get owned" at me! Rude!

Today, we’re preserving a cornerstone of gaming history that is near and dear to our hearts. Together, Microsoft’s Open Source Programs Office (OSPO), Team Xbox, and Activision are making Zork I, Zork II, and Zork III available under the MIT License. Our goal is simple: to place historically important code in the hands of students, teachers, and developers so they can study it, learn from it, and, perhaps most importantly, play it.

HyperRogue by Zeno Rogue

https://zenorogue.itch.io/hyperrogue
The twist is the unique, unusual geometry of the world: it is one of just few games which takes place on the hyperbolic plane. Witness a grid composed of hexagons and heptagons, straight lines which seem to be parallel, but then they diverge and never cross, triangles whose angles add up to less than 180 degrees, how extremely unlikely is it to reach the same place twice, and how the world seems to be rotated when you do return. All this matters for the gameplay. The game is inspired by the roguelike genre (although in a very minimalist way), works of M. C. Escher, and by puzzle games such as Deadly Rooms of Death.

Metroid Prime 1–3: A Visual Retrospective is a fabulous resource for learning more than I ever thought I’d be privy to about Nintendo and Retro Studios’ ambitious first-person adventure series. The 210-page hardcover book launches on October 28th, weeks before the series makes its long-awaited return with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on the Switch and Switch 2. It’s the perfect $50 gift for someone who’s pored over video essays about the trilogy’s design, and who’s always wanted to get a behind-the-scenes look at how the games were made

My party recently finished Descent into Avernus, which we played over Discord and FoundryVTT given how scattered across the country we all are. A few weeks ago it occurred to me that this could be automated, and Scribble was born.

In March 2001, Nintendo introduced an advanced portable model to the gaming market with the release of the Game Boy Advance (GBA, codenamed Advanced Game Boy or AGB). Equipped with a modernized 32-bit ARM CPU running at twice the speed of the Game Boy Color (GBC), this small device was more than capable of playing SNES-like games—still at the price of only two AA batteries.

Fixing E.T. for the Atari 2600

http://www.neocomputer.org/projects/et/#allchanges
It turns out that E.T. isn't a bad game after all. With a few simple changes we were able to dramatically improve an already good game by eliminating the most common complaints. With a few additional changes, we were able to clear up any confusion for players who care about the score, and were confused by the differences between what the manual claims and what actually happens in-game. Next time someone tells you that "E.T. for the Atari 2600 is the worst game ever made" you can tell them that this is not the case. It's been fixed, and you know how.

Give Your Animal Crossing Villagers The Gift Of Linux | Hackaday

thanks to the work of [decrazyo] there’s a piece of furniture that you can add to your Animal Crossing house that will never get old: an x86 emulator that boots Linux. As explained in the video below, this trick leverages the fact that Nintendo had already built a highly accurate Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator into Animal Crossing on the GameCube, which could be used to run a handful of classic games from within the player’s virtual living room. But it turns out that you can get that emulator to load a user-provided ROM from the GameCube’s memory card, which opens the doors to all sorts of mischief.

The story of Rogue - Spillhistorie.no

https://spillhistorie.no/the-story-of-rogue/
Rogue is one of the most influential games of all time. Even if you haven’t played it, you’ve definitely played several games that have Rogue’s DNA in them. It became so popular when it was released for UNIX-based systems in 1980 that it created its own genre, which we still know as ‘roguelike games’. Even in the decades when these games were niche experiences, the genre was important. The action role-playing game Diablo built directly on the roguelike genre, which means that all the games that followed in Diablo’s footsteps also have their roots here.

Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

https://lparchive.org/Legend-of-Zelda-Four-Swords-Adventures/
Released in 2004 for the Nintendo GameCube, Zelda: FSA made use of the wack-ass peripheral known as the GCN-GBA link cable. By hooking these cables up to your Game Boy Advances, you and three friends could play through a cooperative adventure through a land of shittily scaled sprites and bizarre graphical effects known as Hyrule. At the end of each level, everyone gets judged by the game and their heroic cohorts and through a variety of criteria (mainly money), there's a winner for each level. Cooperate and compete. Nintendo's done that a couple of times now.

While the ethics of this technology’s ecological and social impact are debated, use of the technology comes with repeated controversy. This instance of AI-assisted art from the company that made the award-winning Star Realms deck-building game has caused some to take to social media in disappointment and frustration. A few fans of the company state they won’t purchase another game by Wise Wizard, with at least one store stating it will no longer be stocking the company’s products. This anti-AI sentiment is not unanimous, however. Projects like Wonders of the First, Grimcoven, and Terraforming Mars still raised millions of dollars from thousands of backers as recently as June of this year — giving crowdfunding platforms an incentive to keep AI projects on the site, as long as the money is still there.

Knock Off: The Battle for Imagination

https://knockoffthegame.com/
The game’s setting is a truly unique twist on the genre, featuring action figure toys engaged in friendly battles within a young boy’s bedroom. These battles are fueled by the imagination of children, creating a hidden world where these toys come to life. The plot intensifies with the introduction of a powerful new toy, whose elitist views lead to a head-to-head clash with the older knock-off toys. The destiny of imagination rests in your hands.

I prefer to be in the same room as her, even if we’re both doing different things and only periodically talking to each other (this is also one of the fab things about marriage). The Switch lets me shut off the TV but keep playing, without having to go to another room. I keep all my games stuff in the living room.

From a GBA emulation perspective, the games were especially interesting. The average Game Boy Advance game is extremely buggy, and the platform itself contains a number of safeguards to prevent games from crashing. As a result, emulators tend to need to be bug-compatible with the original hardware to ensure that the games actually work. However, the Classic NES Series goes above and beyond the average game in an attempt to ensure they don’t work in emulators.

It was determined that 'The Enslaver' and his Avatar-class Titan had to go. I was approached by one of the leaders of Red Alliance to help make this happen, but almost immediately we were down the rabbit hole. Much to my surprise, the RA director didn't want in-game information from me; he wanted us to use the forensic resources of our intelligence agency to trace down The Enslaver's home address. At a coordinated time, armed with this information, a RA member would apparently cut the power to The Enslaver's house in the real world, and in EVE a RA capital fleet would assault the abruptly pilotless Titan. Yikes.

We hope to move to a space that will include changing exhibits and game play space in the near future. To do that, we need your financial support and the support of corporations. Can you help?

How In-app Purchases Has Destroyed The Industry (by @baekdal) #opinion

http://www.baekdal.com/opinion/how-inapp-purchases-has-destroyed-the-industry/
I don't like writing negative articles that don't include a solution to the problem, but in this case, there is no solution. The state of in-app purchases has now reached a level where we have completely lost it. Not only has the gaming industry shot itself in the foot, hacked off their other foot, and lost both its arms ... but it's still engaging in a strategy that will only damage it further.

MAME 0.151 ROMs : Free Download & Streaming : Internet Archive

https://archive.org/details/MAME_0.151_ROMs
MAME (an acronym of Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is an emulator application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software on modern personal computers and other platforms. The intention is to preserve gaming history by preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten. The aim of MAME is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines; the ability to actually play the games is considered "a nice side effect".

Gamasutra - The new gen's most important question: Who cares?

http://gamasutra.com/view/news/205224/The_new_gens_most_important_question_Who_cares.php
It's unpopular to say you don't care about consoles, to suggest you don't need to care. It feels like disloyalty to the industry. But what's becoming clear, even if it feels controversial and treacherous to say -- even if it threatens the industry and its loyal consumers, galvanizes them to internet arguments -- is that the console business and the industry models that built it are no longer the main avenue for the medium of games. They're probably not even the most important, even though they remain the most visible to your average person.

How Atari box art turned 8-bit games into virtual wonderlands | The Verge

http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/19/4716444/how-atari-box-art-turned-8-bit-games-into-virtual-wonderlands
The original Atari featured a wealth of games with box art that was quite a bit more imaginative than the “grizzled man holding a gun” template that’s so popular today. The concept of playing a video game in your house, on your television, was still in its infancy in the late 1970s, and Atari needed a way to market its games. One solution was to commission intricately detailed covers that sold the idea of a game much better than any simple screenshot could. “The game-playing experience wasn’t 100 percent of the experience,” says Tim Lapetino, an artist and designer currently working on a book about the history of Atari cover art. “Part of what made the world complete was the artwork that conjured up this other place. I wasn’t sitting in my living room anymore; I was on this desolate planet or in space. And it was mostly because of that art.”

In Search of Scanlines: The Best CRT Monitor for Retro Gaming - Tested

Your 1080p HDTV may be great for Blu-ray movies, but it sucks for SNES games. Adopting new television technology means saying goodbye to the advantages of older hardware. And yes, there are advantages. There's no such thing as a best TV for all eras of content. And for retro gaming, diehard gamers and collectors turn to old CRTs and specialty scaling hardware in search for that perfect picture.

Case Study: Auto-Resizing HTML5 Games - HTML5 Rocks

http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/casestudies/gopherwoord-studios-resizing-html5-games/
In the summer of 2010, we created Sand Trap, a game that we entered in a competition on HTML5 games for mobile phones. But most mobile phones either displayed only part of the game or made the game too small—making it completely unplayable. So we took it upon ourselves to make the game fluidly adjust to match any resolution. After a bit of re-programming and using ideas outlined in this article, we had a game that scaled across any modern browser, whether it ran in a desktop or a mobile device.

Stellar Track (Game)

http://www.giantbomb.com/stellar-track/3030-20288/
Stellar Track was a conversion of a college mainframe Star Trek game released by Sears in 1981. It is a suitably primitive game where you have to run scans to locate enemies and starbases on a 6 x 6 galactic map. You run scans to find the enemies then must warp to their quadrant to confront them with either phasers or photon torpedoes. You use the joystick to determine the numerals of where you intend you to travel to.

Monopoly auction rule: Official? Yes. Smart? No.

An old blog post about an “unknown” Monopoly rule has been making its way around the Web the past few days, starting with a piece on BuzzFeed, then spreading to MSN, Yahoo, HuffPo, and a slew of other places. The gist is simple: When landing on a property, you’re allowed to auction it off, with the highest bidder paying the bank, rather than just purchasing it yourself.

Hexagonal Grids

http://www.redblobgames.com/grids/hexagons/
Hexagonal grids are used in some games but aren’t quite as straightforward or common as square grids. I’ve been collecting hex grid resources for nearly 20 years, and wrote this guide to the most elegant approaches that lead to the simplest code, largely based on the guides by Charles Fu and Clark Verbrugge. I’ll describe the various ways to make hex grids (I’ve counted 74 so far!), the relationships between them, as well as some common algorithms. Many parts of this page are interactive; choosing a type of grid will update diagrams, code, and text to match.

Fixing E.T. for the Atari 2600

http://www.neocomputer.org/projects/et/
It turns out that E.T. isn't a bad game after all. With a few simple changes we were able to dramatically improve an already good game by eliminating the most common complaints. With a few additional changes, we were able to clear up any confusion for players who care about the score, and were confused by the differences between what the manual claims and what actually happens in-game. Next time someone tells you that "E.T. for the Atari 2600 is the worst game ever made" you can tell them that this is not the case. It's been fixed, and you know how.

So a couple of nights ago, I went through the familiar steps of manually adding the Freespace Source Code Project files to my GOG copy of Freespace 2. This time, however, I added all the extra high-resolution stuff from the MediaVPs (i.e. all the optional stuff) because I figured my new rig could run it (my last one totally choked when I added all the optional MediaVPs). Once it was all said and done, I ran the launcher and set up everything as ordered (as well as adding Spidey’s lighting settings) and ran the game at maximum resolution with everything set as high as possible for my first time ever. What resulted was nothing short of breathtaking.

Why Mass Effect is the Most Important Science Fiction Universe of Our Generation

http://io9.com/5886178/why-mass-effect-is-the-most-important-science-fiction-universe-of-our-generation
Mass Effect is epic. It's the product of the best parts of Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and more with a protagonist who could be the love-child of Picard, Skywalker, and Starbuck. It's one of the most important pieces of science fiction narrative of our generation. Mass Effect goes so far beyond other fictional universes in ways that you may not have yet realized. It is cosmic in scope and scale.

It’s the shadow of an idea that slipped into the world last week during a free-wheeling conversation about design, agency, failure, and whether games can make meaningful statements about the nature of tragedy. To help the discussion along we invented a few imaginary games that could serve as stable reference points in unfamiliar terrain. One of the things we dreamed up is Tourney, a game about maintaining one’s integrity in the face of inevitable decline.

Marriage is a sacred commitment; it's no kind of small thing to consider. You need to show you mean business. You need to put some effort into a proposal. Jered McFerron did when he decided to rewrite the code for the 1986 NES classic, Metroid, in the C++ programming language. This undertaking wasn't initially to propose to his love, Jenni, but struck as an inspiration mid-project when he knew she was the gal for him.

This corrosion is due to some sort of contamination from the factory. Due to this corrosion, it was found that some X-Boxes affected can produce the following symptoms: (1) The X-Box fails to power down using the power on/off button on the front panel. The power cord has to be pulled out to shut it down. (2) As soon as the power cord is plugged in, the X-Box powers up without pressing either the on/off or eject buttons. (3) While the X-Box is on for a certain amount of time, it shuts down by itself for no reason. The time factor before shut down can vary wildly.

Arzea Walkthrough Guide, Review, Discussion, Hints and Tips at Jay is Games

http://jayisgames.com/archives/2012/02/arzea.php
When I'm not writing reviews for JayIsGames, I work full-time as a wizard. It's not easy work, believe me, nor is it nearly as glamorous as the movies make it out to be. One wrong incantation and you've blown yourself up or summoned an uncontrollable horde of demons. Arzea, a Metroidvania-style adventure game created by Arkeus originally for a Ludum Dare 24-hour game development competition and then expanded upon, demonstrates the kind of danger that magic can lead to. You're a wizard stranded in a strange world with only your wits and a variety of spells and upgrades to help you get home.

Atari 2600 Wireless Joysticks | The Retroist

These early generation wireless joysticks were a far cry from the wireless pads we’ve come to enjoy (and expect) today. For starters, each joystick contained a 9-volt battery, an on/off switch, and a non-retractable 6″ antenna poking out the front of each one. I guess after the batteries died, you could still sword fight with them.

SWTOR Catches the Dancing Bug…that Makes Players Immortal | Inside Gaming Daily Blog

http://www.insidegamingdaily.com/2012/01/05/swtor-catches-the-dancing-bugthat-makes-players-immortal
According to a post on Geekosystem, BioWare’s new MMO allows players to dance by entering different commands—which, apparently, is something that other MMOs let you do as well, a thing I didn’t know was true. But what sets SWTOR apart from those other games is that, while your on-screen avatar is boogying with the “/getdown command”, your enemies “can’t maintain focus,” meaning you can’t get hit. This is not a bug they should have fixed :)

Why Star Wars: The Old Republic Matters | PIXELS OR DEATH

And with this comes my old friend: the solo, in-my-brain roleplaying. SWTOR is the first MMORPG to engage the part of my brain where my imagination dwells – and I’ve played a lot of them. Usually, I’m left with the cheap thrill of my level increasing, or my sword getting gnarlier, and SWTOR definitely leans on these same trappings occasionally. But, regardless, Bioware has succeeded in igniting my brain in ways that only single player games have previously – and, to frank with ya’ll, I can’t stop playing it. The in-brain back story and moral compass are all firmly in play, and enriching the game constantly.

Apparently Valve employees have Half-Life 3 t-shirts | Joystiq

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/02/apparently-valve-employees-have-half-life-3-t-shirts
Keep in mind that Valve isn't above trolling its own fans -- Gabe Newell could have a 50-square-foot room at Valve studios stuffed full of Half-Life 3 t-shirts, foam hands and head crabs to keep the excitement alive, and a lot of empty hard drive space for the actual game. Nonetheless, @Ekanaut, the marketing man for Monday Night Combat studio Uber Entertainment, spotted this Half-Life 3 shirt "worn by a Valve employee" at Seattle's Eastside Industry Night.

SupaBoy portable SNES, the most fun you can have without a soldering iron -- Engadget

http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/02/supaboy-portable-snes-the-most-fun-you-can-have-without-a-solde
We previewed Hyperkin's SupaBoy back in the summer and loved the idea of toting 'round original SNES games without resorting to Ben Heck-style crafting. The handheld takes full-size cartridges, packs a 3.5-inch screen and a battery that's disappointingly rated for just two point five hours (best keep a power cable handy). It'll also double as a home console: there's an AV-out port and slots for two classic controllers for when you wanna kick it old-school. It's reportedly compatible with titles like Mario World, A Link to the Past and Starwing Starfox, but who needs them when we've got a mint condition copy of Tetris Attack at home? It'll cost you $80 and is available from Amazon as of yesterday -- we suggest you get to practicing blowing the dirt from the connectors, since you'll be doing a lot of it soon.

3D Classics: Kid Icarus trailer. It’s Kid Icarus with… backgrounds! This is seriously mind-blowing stuff. I’m not even being sarcastic, either. This game looks awesome with even static backgrounds. I’m genuinely impressed. They look kind of better than the NES could do, giving it a PC Engine-esque look. I’m so down for this.

As I sat upon the creaky wooden steps, I felt as though my grip on sanity was beginning to loosen. My breaths came in rapid, gasping spurts, and my heart was beating with such ferocity, I felt for certain it would leap from my chest and fall to the unforgiving floor where it would flop to and fro like a great crimson fish. My skin was slick with a veneer of cool, clammy sweat, and my hands, which held the source of my terror, shook a bit as I read each cursed word inscribed in that hellish tome. Why did I ever allow my curiosity concerning the priceless urn of the Graves Mansion get the better of me?

During the Retroist Arcade Meet Up last week, our very own Plcary asked the gurus of 1984 if they remembered an arcade game where you were positioned in the center of the screen and had to defeat wave after wave of enemies as they came rushing at you, not using a joystick but four directional buttons and a firing button. The gang at 1984 and myself were stumped on this one, but Plcary kept at it and found out the name of the arcade game and it is Midway’s Space Zap from back in 1980.

StarCraft changed my life | The Verge

Back in the real world, at Legends, StarCraft fans continued to trickle in. We had the whole main floor to ourselves, and it finally started to fill up late in the afternoon, but "real" sports fans vastly outnumbered us for most of the day. Just after the soccer fans finally chilled out, some NY Giants fans congregated in the balcony and proceeded to be real jerks about it; one jersey-clad fan stood and pointed at us from above, as if we were a curiosity in a zoo. In a particularly tense moment, where the football fans started yelling irrationally at their own screens, StarCraft fans started chanting "MLG! MLG! MLG! MLG!," as if that would quiet the opposition.

"Traditionally, GOG.com has looked for great classics that are three years old or older," he said. "We will continue to add classic games, of course, but we are actively working to sign newer titles now." Rambourg noted that the newer games will cost more than most GOG releases --$13.99 to $16.99, but that the company plans to maintain its DRM-free model. The low prices suggest that these won't be brand new games, but simply games more recent than GOG's current three-year cutoff period.

These tutorial systems have been serviceable in the past -- for example, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift had a good tutorial system that taught players how to use each character -- but no tutorial system has better illustrated how to effectively master the genre. In BlazBlue, if you've never touched a 2D fighter, you're out of luck. If you've never devoted serious time to a 2D fighting game before, Skullgirls will teach you how to crawl, walk, then dominate your opponents. It wants to train you to be a master and I'm all for that.

Before I tell you this story, I should introduce Rachael Webster. The trouble is, I’m not sure how to do that. Was she a friend of mine? Sure. A great friend. We spent nine months together as tight as Siamese twins. But she wasn’t family, and I never really met her in person. I could say she didn’t exist, but that’s a copout: she obviously existed, and had a life, and friends, and a career, at least until her budget ran out and I had to write her out of this world.

"When we were thinking of putting together the Special Edition," Lu said, "we were trying to come up with things fans would like. We had this beautiful artwork with Mine Yoshizaki, so we wanted to do something interesting and fun that would show it off. Also, one of the Japanese special editions comes with a bedsheet, so our super hardcore fans can have a full bed set." See? Practical through and through.

Is it Game Over for Nintendo DS and Sony PSP?

http://blog.flurry.com/bid/77424/Is-it-Game-Over-for-Nintendo-DS-and-Sony-PSP
Portable gaming, played primarily on Nintendo DS and Sony PSP devices, has been dominated by these two companies for over two decades. In this model, at retail, consumers pay around $200 for the gaming device and up to $40 for popular game cartridges. Because of the similar form factor, overlap in consumer base (especially younger players on iPod touch) and the casual nature of game content, Flurry combines iOS and Android devices with traditional portable devices to form the category. With the inclusion of smartphone game revenue into the category, shifts taking place in market share become clearer.

I have a lot of love for World of Warcraft in each of its iterations. When I wrote 5 reasons you should love Mists of Pandaria, it really made me start to look back at the history of the game -- not necessarily the lore and story that I usually write about, but the various expansions from classic all the way to the upcoming Mists. Though the expansions themselves were vastly different in terms of story and progression, there are still things to love about every single one -- yes, including Cataclysm.

You start with 6 planets, and a little bit of money. You are required to feed your people and army, and to pay to maintain your planets and army. If you fail to do these things, disastrous results may occur. You are given 20 years (“turns”) of protection, during which you can not attack or be attacked. You can not perform covert operations (except Spy). This provides a way for smaller empires to build up their defenses and planets before they enter the “real world”. "

"Sadly, there is a contentious debate amongst psychologists about how rewards affect motivation, and I spend a bunch of time in the talk discussing this debate. Psychology is at the soft end of science, to put it mildly, and so it's easy for people—including academics—to have an agenda or opinion and "interpret" the data in a way that backs up that agenda or opinion. This is human nature, of course, and confirmation bias is everywhere in life, but reading some of the papers reminds me more of a schoolyard yelling contest than of peer reviewed research. "

"While Link can move a single pixel at a time, in any direction, the longer he continously moves in any direction the more he gravitates toward aligning himself with the underlying grid of the screen. The tile grid for LoZ is 16 tiles wide by 14 tiles high (including 3 tiles for the status display at the top of the screen). Each tile is 16×16 pixels. Link operates on a half-tile grid, though (32×28 tiles, 8×8 pixels each). As Link moves, if he’s not currently aligned with the half-tile grid, he is adjusted, one pixel at a time, toward the closest correction. As a result, if Link is 4 pixels off alignment he’ll line back up with the grid after moving 4 pixels."

While a noble technical endeavor, this leaves to us the tasks of upgrading and extending the IGB to match the ever-shifting currents of the HTML standard. Hardly the best way for us to serve you, the player! But, like Atlas, we now have two Pillars upon which to rest these burdens. The first, and undoubtedly greatest, is the Heraclidean support provided by Awesomium and its Prince of Code. "People who are interested in interactive fiction but who haven’t played much or any of it ask me for suggestions from time to time — not as often as I’d like, of course, but, luckily, once in a while. I’ve had a page of recommendations up on my site since 2005. The games on that list remain good ones, but I’m now updating those recommendations to take into account games from recent years. I’m posting the new recommendations here. Note that many of the people who ask me about IF are of a literary bent, as am I, and my suggestions reflect that."

"While over the years there has been no shortage of Beatles merchandise, some of it crass, the decision to release the game on the same date as the new CDs is, as well as an irresistible marketing tactic, a signal that the game is meant to be an authentic part of the band’s canon (as is McCartney’s decision to show footage from the game during his current American tour). The Beatles are positioning themselves to once again play a significant role in the evolution of popular music — this time by embracing interactivity. "

"DUST 514 is a first-person shooter that's being incorporated into the EVE universe, acting essentially an MMO for consoles. It's a mix of first-person shooting and real-time strategy gameplay where you play as a marine with a rifle running around on the ground. It's not only set in the EVE universe, it's actually connected to EVE. The DUST battlefields will determine who controls territory within EVE's world. The EVE Online players will have to contract players of DUST to go in and destabilize territory. CCP's hope is that the first-person shooter crowd on consoles and the PC EVE Online crowd will eventually form alliances together."

All those old games (for hardware reasons, of course) seemed to kind of take place in a world of floating neon blocks where faceless creatures slide endlessly back and forth for no reason. Tough enemies were suddenly wusses, and an upgraded or new weapon leveled the playing field tremendously. It was tough not to take pleasure in the increased body count of your foes. For this article, I’m not writing about standard or default weapons - like, say, Pit’s bow in Kid Icarus - no matter how cool they may be. Instead, here’s a look at ten of the most devastating weapons that one can acquire in games for the original NES."

"1983 was the year of the video game crash and that year’s Sears Wishbook was chock full of the detritus of a bloated dying industry. You got the handhelds, Vectrex, Gemini, Colecovision, Intellivision, Odyssey 2, Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 in this issue. Along with some great games and accessories. Any time that was left I spent drawing and programming games for my Commodore 64. At a later age a few of my childhood dreams became a reality when I temporarily moved to Melbourne, where I worked as a videogame programmer, did oil-painting in a studio and had my work displayed in one of the local galleries. After a course in Graphic Design I made a career-switch and became a graphic designer/illustrator. Fast, responsive, 25 image skinning, many settings tweak able through "glabalsettings.ini", after using it for a couple minutes you'd think it was the winner of this flashcart race hands down. Thats not necessarily the case. Its still lacking quite a few features touted by its competition, such as real-time save, in-game guide, slow-motion, and integrated expansion cart support. However, if those features aren't a requisite in your purchase, the acekard 2 is definitely a winner."

Oh for crying out loud, put on your big girl panties on and use Boot Camp to play your Windows games. It's like a 20 second reboot these days, plus another 2-3 minutes before I'm connecting to a server in Team Fortress 2 (for example). "There's just one problem with Warhammer Online though...there's no Mac version! Yep, that's right. Somewhere along the way in its development Mythic Entertainment—the company who makes WAR—decided that they simply couldn't be bothered doing a Mac version. Unlike Blizzard or Maxis who both released Mac versions of World of Warcraft and Spore—Mythic stupidly did not. "

"If you’re like me and have always had trouble getting in to RTS games but you like the genre anyway (is that specific enough?) then I think Multiwinia is a great place to start. The game mechanics are very easy to understand, there’s not a lot of rules and commands to memorize and there’s not an overbearing amount of micromanagement. RTS vets might scoff at some of what Multiwinia is “missing” but if they were to give the game a shot they’d find that it’s as complex and deep as any game out there. Whether you’re on a PC, Mac or Linux machine Multiwinia is worth your time even in this crowded fall season."

The fire button was touch-sensitive, as were the buttons on the console. The Reset and Select buttons were relocated to the controllers themselves. The 2700 also featured a storage bin at the top of the console to store the controllers. Focus groups used to test the system noted that the controllers were comfortable, sleek, responsive, and very easy to use."

It sounds crazy that someone would bid that much, but the winning bidder is definitely going to be in possession of something they don’t have to worry about finding over at their buddy’s house any time soon. Shred Nebula Review (Xbox 360)

http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1561/Shred-Nebula/p1
"At first glance, Shred Nebula looks like a quick cash-in on the current Geometry Wars craze. However, its unique control scheme—more akin to classic Asteroids—proves it has little in common with the popular dual-stick-controlled series. In fact, despite resembling an arcade shooter you would’ve controlled with a joystick and single button back in the day, its mechanics are fairly complex. Direction is steered with the left stick, but forward and reverse thrusters are powered with the left trigger and bumper, respectively. Toss in a variety of weapons, shields, and other spacecraft-enhancing abilities mapped to the rest of the gamepad’s bevy of buttons and triggers, and you’ve got a cockpit full of controls that’d make Buck Roger’s head spin. Raptr Blog » Raptr Public Beta Launch!

http://blog.raptr.com/2008/09/03/raptr-public-beta-launch
"No more secret handshakes, no more private invites; we’re proud to open the doors to Raptr and share the service in an open public beta! ... Raptr was born out of a stellar team of people who are passionate about playing and discovering games. ... In every case, each game or system seemed to require a separate login before we could even begin to see whether our friends were playing. There was no single place to go to see what your friends were playing - until now. ... Know when your friends are playing ... See how your friends are doing in their games ... Discover new games you might like ... One thing we think is pretty cool about Raptr is that we intelligently recommend games to you that you didn’t even know existed or that you didn’t even know were out yet."

Infovore » Playing Together: What Games Can Learn from Social Software

http://infovore.org/talks/playing-together-what-games-can-learn-from-social-software
"MMO servers are currently limited by technological sizes. But what does a server where you know everybody (even a little) look like? What if we limited group sizes for social, not technological reasons? ... We wouldn’t have these servers that resemble sprawling cities; we’d build villages, and hamlets, and travelling camps. And as they grew too big, or small groups within the community grew, they’d break off and move to places where there’s more space for them. In one sense, that’s a more natural metaphor for our users, and it’s a scale that makes sense for them. ... I like this idea that everything, fundamentally, happens at a group level."
