Doctor When

https://orbitaloperations.beehiiv.com/p/doctor-when?utm_source=orbitaloperations.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=doctor-when
DOCTOR WHO is gone. STAR TREK has reached the end of its cycle. The STARGATE reboot was cancelled. The new STAR WARS film did not do well, and I believe they only have one more film in the pipeline. The MCU is not in a great place and the shape of its future will balance on the two new AVENGERS films. SUPERMAN’s takings were soft and SUPERGIRL is tracking at less than half of SUPERMAN’s opening. And the two biggest films of the last month were made for less than a million each by directors in their twenties. One or two swallows don’t make a summer, but right now it looks like old science fiction inflected IP is reaching a hiatus point.

Urban Dictionary: Riker's Beard

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Riker%27s%20Beard
The opposite of jump the shark, i.e. when a TV show goes from unspectacular/boring/outlandish to completely awesome. It references Star Trek: The Next Generation, which was unspectacular until season 2, when Commander Riker grew a beard. The show kicked ass from then on.

Why the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray is going to rip you off

The official Blu-ray has seven mini-featurettes. Seems kind of bare bones for such a major summer release, eh? Indeed it does, because Paramount has divvied up all the other features — including the commentary tracks with the cast and director J.J. Abrams, and several additional featurettes — have been given exclusive to the Target release, the Best Buy release, and the iTunes download. Meaning 1) if you buy the normal version you're getting less than half the special features created for the home video release, and 2) if you want all of them you're going to need to purchase at least three separate versions.

Stellar Track (Game)

http://www.giantbomb.com/stellar-track/3030-20288/
Stellar Track was a conversion of a college mainframe Star Trek game released by Sears in 1981. It is a suitably primitive game where you have to run scans to locate enemies and starbases on a 6 x 6 galactic map. You run scans to find the enemies then must warp to their quadrant to confront them with either phasers or photon torpedoes. You use the joystick to determine the numerals of where you intend you to travel to.

These conversion routines convert to and from Star Trek: The Next Generation style Stardates. These stardates take the form YYXXX.XX where the first two digits refer to the year with 2323 being year zero and the remaining digits being the decimal portion of the year. The last digit before the decimal point is one stardate and is approximately eight and three quarters hours in length.

I've been struck particularly by two things missing from the DS9 universe--one unpredictable in the 1993-99 span of the series, and one predictable but unattractive from the creators' standpoint. Nobody uses social media, and nobody wastes time.

The 10 Most Explosively Masculine Captain Kirk Battle Techniques

http://io9.com/5855581/the-10-most-explosively-masculine-captain-kirk-battle-techniques
James Tiberius Kirk: lover, explorer, chanteur, a veritable 23rd-century bon vivant. Captain Kirk has many fine traits, but his martial prowess is perhaps most deserving of our fear and respect. Here are 10 fighting maneuvers that should be enshrined by Starfleet as "The Decalogue of Whooping Ass."

Blaster Beam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Blaster_Beam
"The Blaster Beam is a concept electronic musical instrument consisting of a 12 to 18-foot (5.5 m) long metal beam strung with numerous tensed wires under which are mounted electric guitar pickups which can be moved to alter the sound produced. The instrument is played by striking or plucking the strings with fingers, sticks, pipes or even large objects such as artillery shell casings. The instrument produces a very distinctive bass tone, the sound of which is often described as 'dark' or 'sinister'."

TV | Star Wars | Dramatic Irony and Clone Wars | Overthinking It

"Here’s the key thing to remember about the galactic conflict known as the Clone Wars: they are a complete and utter farce. Palpatine is literally controlling both sides: he commands the Republic’s clone army as Supreme Chancellor, and he leads the Separatist’s droid army as Darth Sidious. ... Imagine if Gargamel was secretly working for Papa Smurf. ... The Jedi lose the Clone Wars, bigtime. They not only don’t defeat the robot army, they are all killed. By their OWN TROOPS."
