Making WiFi Sound Like Dial-Up Internet | Hackaday

https://hackaday.com/2025/10/24/making-wifi-sound-like-dial-up-internet/
Dial-up modems had a distinctive sound when connecting, with the glittering, screeching song becoming a familiar melody to those jumping online in the early days of the Internet. Modern digital connections don’t really have an analog to this, by virtue of being entirely digital. And yet, [Nick Bild] decided to make WiFi audible in a pleasing tribute to the modems of yore.

JawnCon0x1: The Modem Badge

Having decided the retro late-80s early-90s theme for JawnCon 0x1, the inspiration for the badge seemed almost immediately obvious: the iconic, venerable Hayes SmartModem oozes industrial design of the era and is instantly recognizable to any of us who grew up when computers had the decency to shriek like digital banshees to let us know when they were plotting against us.

Node.js WiFi-Extending Robot

The beast above is a robotic system intended to be operated remotely in hazardous areas where network infrastructure is scarce. The robot is controlled over a WiFi network that originates on the robot and is extended by dropping the black repeater units on its back. I and seven other computer and electrical engineers built this monster as part of a senior design project at Northeastern University.

Gizmodo - Sprint Selling MiFi 2200 Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot for Its 3G Service - Sprint mobile hotspot

http://gizmodo.com/5252533/sprint-selling-mifi-2200-portable-wi+fi-hotspot-for-its-3g-service
I've got a pocket in my backpack that'd be perfect for this thing. "Remember how well Sprint 3G did in tests? And how much we like portable hotspots? Put them together with the $100 Novatel MiFi 2200, and you have a pretty nice setup, dubbed "Sprint Mobile Hotspot.""

Novetel’s MiFi Isn’t Just a Skinny Looker. It’s Smart Too.

http://jkontherun.com/2009/04/02/novetels-mifi-isnt-just-a-skinny-looker-its-smart-too
"The device includes both a 3G and a WiFi radio: you simply turn it on, it connects to a 3G network and then broadcasts that signal over WiFi for up to five devices. Aside from the initial configuration, the most difficult interaction you’ll have with the MiFi is pressing the power button. There’s nothing else to do, but use it.But the MiFi isn’t a “dumb”, single purpose device; it has some smarts too. Novatel says that the device can actually run applications on the embedded Linux platform inside. That brings a vast number of possible ways to extend the MiFi beyond a simple 3G hotspot."

"Skyhook Wireless, provider of the Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS), recently announced that Apple is using its technology for the new Wi-Fi location positioning feature in its Maps application on both iPhone and iPod touch. Using WPS, iPhone and iPod touch users can now locate themselves in the popular Maps application with the tap of one button. (See Skyhook Wireless featured in the Macworld Keynote.)"

Novatel MiFi proves "3G hotspot" and "sexy" can coexist - Engadget

I've had Palm sleds and PCMCIA cards for cellular internet from these guys. This thing looks hot. "Our EV-DO ExpressCards are looking a whole lot frumpier (and less functional) today now that Novatel's shown off this hot little metallic number, the "MiFi" mobile 3G hotspot for getting high-speed data to you and your closest friends on the go. Routing your choice of EV-DO Rev. A or HSPA over WiFi, the slab is about as wide and long as a credit card -- goodness -- and features an internal battery that'll allegedly be good for four hours of use or forty hours of standby on one charge. The MiFi is scheduled to blast off in the first half of 2009 through carriers and retail channels, which means we can finally look forward to ditching our N78 with Joikuspot and a couple hundred dollars worth of spare batteries."

Meraki Releases World’s First Solar-Powered WiFi Device : CleanTechnica

http://cleantechnica.com/2008/12/05/meraki-releases-worlds-first-solar-powered-wifi-device
"Yesterday, wireless networking provider Meraki started shipping the world’s first solar-powered WiFi mesh device. Meraki’s groundbreaking energy-independent device is powered by a single solar panel and solar-charged battery. Since the unit requires no grid-derived energy, it can be set up in areas lacking power suppliesWith a price range of $848 to $1,497, Meraki’s set-up isn’t exactly cheap. It is, however, cheaper than most other outdoor wireless network installations. The most expensive item in outdoor wireless networks is often the electrical cabling installation— a step that isn’t necessary for the Meraki unit since it uses a solar-powered battery."

"Introducing Geode, an experimental add-on to explore geolocation in Firefox 3 ahead of the implementation of geolocation in a future product release. Geode provides an early implementation of the W3C Geolocation specification so that developers can begin experimenting with enabling location-aware experiences using Firefox 3 today, and users can tell us what they think of the experience it provides. It includes a single experimental geolocation service provider so that any computer with WiFi can get accurate positioning data."

"If your router uses 802.11g, it may default to only the "g" band. This setting will not work with the DS."
