It's time to talk about my writerdeck

https://veronicaexplains.net/my-first-writerdeck/
Of course, I'm a Linux user, and I have any number of options. I could have gone with a simple desktop or window manager and just not installed a browser, but I wanted something that really broke the desktop OS muscle memory and forced me into thinking about my words with intention. I opted for a tty-based setup, using Debian (Trixie at the time of writing). Console only- no x11 or Wayland, no desktop getting in my way.

Installer crashes in storage editor in all Live environments except Workstation - Fedora Discussion

https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/installer-crashes-in-storage-editor-in-all-live-environments-except-workstation/192590
Workarounds Don’t start the installer (or quit it if you started it already). Start terminal (Konsole in KDE) and edit a config file: sudo nano /etc/anaconda/profile.d/fedora.conf Find this part: # The default browser for the Web UI. webui_web_engine = slitherer and change it to: # The default browser for the Web UI. webui_web_engine = firefox Close the editor (Ctrl+X → Y → Enter), and run the installer, either from a desktop launcher, or from a terminal: liveinst The installer should no longer crash when using drop-down lists.

KDE liveinst crash - Fedora Discussion

https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/kde-liveinst-crash/177548/11
I had this exact issue attempting to install Fedora 44 KDE live ISO on an older laptop with a GeForce GTX 970 GPU. I resolved it by forcing Anaconda to use Firefox instead of Slitherer. I can confirm that Firefox was the selected default browser, but for some reason the indicated variable doesn’t seem to work Instead of editing /usr/libexec/anaconda/webui-desktop I changed the following line inside /etc/anaconda/profile.d/fedora.conf: webui_web_engine = slitherer to webui_web_engine = firefox this allowed me to start Anaconda GUI normally and proceed with installing Fedora 44.

How to turn anything into a router

https://nbailey.ca/post/router/
Fortunately, you can make a router out of basically anything resembling a computer. I’ve used a linux powered mini-pc as my own router for many years, and have posted a few times before about how to make linux routers and firewalls in that time. It’s been rock solid stable, and the only issue I’ve had over the years was wearing out a $20 mSATA drive. While I use Debian typically, Alpine linux probably works just as well, perhaps better if you’re familiar with it. As long as the device runs Linux well and has a couple USB ports, you’re good to go. Mini-PCs, desktop PCs, SBCs, rackmount servers, old laptops, or purpose built devices will all work.

The Unexpected Joys Of Hacking An Old Kindle | Hackaday

https://hackaday.com/2025/11/24/the-unexpected-joys-of-hacking-an-old-kindle/
Make no mistake, I’m greatly appreciative of the fact that we now have mature single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi available for a reasonable cost. But taking what’s essentially consumer e-waste and turning it into a useful platform for learning and experimentation is the true hacker way. So whether you’ve got a Kindle collecting dust somewhere at home, or end up grabbing a few off of eBay for a song, I invite you to bust out the USB-serial adapter and start exploring.

マリウス . A Word on Omarchy

https://xn--gckvb8fzb.com/a-word-on-omarchy/
Omarchy feels like a project created by a Linux newcomer, utterly captivated by all the cool things that Linux can do, but lacking the architectural knowledge to get the basics right, and the experience to give each tool a thoughtful review. Instead of carefully selecting software and ensuring that everything works as promised, the approach seems to be more about throwing everything that somehow looks cool into a pile. There’s no attention to sensible defaults, no real quality control, and certainly no verification that the setup won’t end up causing harm or, at the very least, frustration for the user. The primary focus seems to be on creating a visually appealing but otherwise hollow product.

Thoughts On Omarchy: Slick Distro, Complicated Ethics

https://tedium.co/2025/10/13/omarchy-linux-distro-commentary/
Omarchy is a reminder that we live in a world where software isn’t just software, but the people who make it. And dhh, despite his rep as a dev’s dev, comes with a hell of a lot of baggage. Recently, the Ruby on Rails community has been through some things, and dhh himself has proven a lightning rod on multiple occasions, most recently for a post many saw as deeply xenophobic, bordering on eugenicist.

Making Video Games in 2025 (without an engine) - Noel Berry

https://noelberry.ca/posts/making_games_in_2025/
When I share stuff I'm working on, people frequently ask how I make games and are often surprised (and sometimes concerned?) when I tell them I don't use commercial game engines. There's an assumption around making games without a big tool like Unity or Unreal that you're out there hand writing your own assembly instruction by instruction.

Give Your Animal Crossing Villagers The Gift Of Linux | Hackaday

https://hackaday.com/2025/02/18/give-your-animal-crossing-villagers-the-gift-of-linux/
thanks to the work of [decrazyo] there’s a piece of furniture that you can add to your Animal Crossing house that will never get old: an x86 emulator that boots Linux. As explained in the video below, this trick leverages the fact that Nintendo had already built a highly accurate Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator into Animal Crossing on the GameCube, which could be used to run a handful of classic games from within the player’s virtual living room. But it turns out that you can get that emulator to load a user-provided ROM from the GameCube’s memory card, which opens the doors to all sorts of mischief.

leaningtech/webvm: Virtual Machine for the Web

https://github.com/leaningtech/webvm
WebVM is a server-less virtual environment running fully client-side in HTML5/WebAssembly. It's designed to be Linux ABI-compatible. It runs an unmodified Debian distribution including many native development toolchains. WebVM is powered by the CheerpX virtualization engine, and enables safe, sandboxed client-side execution of x86 binaries on any browser. CheerpX includes an x86-to-WebAssembly JIT compiler, a virtual block-based file system, and a Linux syscall emulator.

Renegade BBS in Ubuntu Linux - Telnet|Multi-Node

http://www.instructables.com/id/Renegade-BBS-in-Ubuntu-Linux-Telnet-Multi-Node/
There are many open source BBS resources out there for Linux, but I came up short in finding anything even remotely mentioning renegade and Linux in the same sentence. This left me feeling nostalgically challenged so I set out to find a way to run a telnet multi-node Renegade BBS from my Ubuntu system. In this instructable, I will show you how I achieved this and hopefully inspire some much needed creative improvements as well.

Mount / Unmount Android System images | My Cellar Door

http://javigon.com/2012/09/04/mount-unmount-android-system-images/
There are many reasons for wanting to unpack Android’s system image. The most obvious is modifying it. System.img is in the end an ext4 loop file system (such as the Linux system image), that can be mounted, modified and repacked in order to be burned afterwards in an embedded system. Android’s system image can be obtained from the google factory images.

How to manually mount a USB Hard Disk, including a disk that was part of a RAID1 array - SynologyWiki

http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.php/How_to_manually_mount_a_USB_Hard_Disk,_including_a_disk_that_was_part_of_a_RAID1_array#How_to_mount_a_USB_enclosure_containing_a_RAID1_disk
This wiki shows you how to manually mount a USB Drive enclosure containing a Hard Disk. The term "mount" is the Linux term for adding a data device to a system so that its contents are navigatable. The procedure also describes the steps necessary if the Hard Drive in the USB enclosure was previously part of a working RAID 1 configuration (e.g. removed from another Synology Server). The same procedure will also probably work for RAID 0 drives, but I have not tested that.

Thoughts on Technology: HOWTO: Scale Your Display under Linux

http://jeffhoogland.blogspot.com/2011/09/howto-scale-your-display-under-linux.html
Something that has always annoyed me about a good deal of netbooks is the fact that someone decided that 1024x600 was an acceptable maximum resolution. While this isn't always an issue, it becomes extra annoying when you attach an external display to your tiny computer. By default your are typically forced into one of two choices:

Firefox OS for Raspberry Pi: Now Available

It has been quite some time since my last post about Firefox OS running on a Raspberry Pi, but the questions didn’t stop to come in “when will it be released”? Well, I’m sorry that it took so long (sometimes finding time is not that easy), but finally, here we are: the sources and build instructions are available!

Backup your Linux system to Dropbox | Personal website of Dave Hope

As an adovate of Dropbox I’ve been keen to find a simple way to backup by webserver/VPS to Dropbox. With up to 10gB of storage space for free there’s plenty of capacity for me to backup some MySQL databases and webroot. Unfortunately the Linux command line dropbox client doesn’t provide any way to synchronise a specific directory.

Over time, if these older kernels are not removed, precious hard disk space may be wasted and your system’s performance may suffer.

Duplicated Virtual Machines Have Same IP Address (View topic) • virtualbox.org

"Ok, that Ubuntu issue is a known problem. It saves the assignment of MAC ethX using an udev rule. Have a look at /etc/udev/rules.d and you will find a file 70-persistent-net.rules there. You can savely remove this file. This file is auto-generated by /lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules. You can remove that file as well. From now on, the guest will no longer store the assignment between the MAC and ethX interface."
