Dumbest War Ever Erupts Over Which State Looks Most Like a Mitten

http://gawker.com/5866161/dumbest-war-ever-erupts-over-which-state-looks-most-like-a-mitten
That image (above, left) has become the centerpiece of Travel Wisconsin's website and Facebook page. Michigan is (justifiably) pissed off, as they have long compared their state to a mitten, and feel Wisconsin is just flagrantly stealing their mitten-shaped-state shtick! A website called Awesome Mitten first noticed and tweeted their outrage to their followers, and an all-out social media war has ensued.

Rabbi Jason Miller: I'm A Detroiter Too: A Response

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rabbi-jason-miller/im-a-detroiter-too-a-resp_b_1106736.html?comm_ref=false&ref=fb&src=sp
I'm very happy that Barlow has fallen in love with Downtown Detroit and everything that it has to offer him -- from grocery stores no one in the suburbs think exist to the dry cleaners where he drops off his shirts. Whether Barlow realizes it or not, through his words he has brought the late Mayor Coleman A. Young back to life. Or at least the former mayor's sentiment. In his twenty years in office, Mayor Young successfully drew a sharp divide between the residents of the City of Detroit and the suburbanites. The race riots of the late 1960s forced middle class whites to flee the city, but it was Mayor Young who kept them away. The polarizing mayor made the Eight Mile border a dividing landmark between the races. I'm afraid Barlow isn't helping matters today.

Toby Barlow: "Detroit," Meet Detroit

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/toby-barlow/detroit-meet-detroit_b_1097133.html
You may know this already, but the one thing I've learned since I moved here is that many, if not most, of the people who identify themselves as being from "Detroit" have really no idea what Detroit is like. That's because they really live in, say, Novi, Warren, even neighboring Redford, and haven't explored downtown in years. Holding onto mythologies perpetuated by a hysterical press over the past quarter century, they cling to the belief that there are no grocery stores in the city (we actually have 115) and still ask me where I get my dry cleaning done (for the last time, I get my dry cleaning done at the dry cleaners.) They've been to the Fox, to Comerica Park, and maybe waited in line at Slows, but they haven't been to MOCAD, Astro Coffee, D'Mongo's, Good Girls Go to Paris, Le Petit Zinc, Supino's Pizza or any of the other places that have popped up over the past half-decade.

"As a candidate for his party's gubernatorial nomination, Cox has every right to pander to the Tea Party adherents many believe will play a decisive role in August's Republican primary. As Michigan's top law enforcement officer, he should know better than to pursue his specious claim that Congress has exceeded its constitutional authority."

In Ann Arbor, Beer Begets More Beer

http://www.concentratemedia.com/features/annarborbreweries0095.aspx
"If someone took the time to draw out all the connections between craft brewers in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area, it might look like the incestuous family tree the back country people in Deliverance scrawled in their family bible. But even the most seasoned beer connoisseur probably wouldn't be able to taste those connections while sampling a pint from one of the many local brewpubs and microbreweries. "

Farming: One way to try and save Detroit - Dec. 29, 2009

http://money.cnn.com/2009/12/29/news/economy/farming_detroit.fortune?section=magazines_fortune
"Crop selection will depend on the soil conditions of the plots that Hantz acquires. Experts insist that most of the land is not irretrievably toxic. The majority of the lots now vacant in Detroit were residential, not industrial; the biggest problem is how compacted the soil is. For the most part the farms will focus on high-margin edibles: peaches, berries, plums, nectarines, and exotic greens. Score says that the first crops are likely to be lettuce and heirloom tomatoes."

The Ann Arbor Chronicle » Transitioning Ann Arbor to Self-Reliance

http://annarborchronicle.com/2009/07/23/transitioning-ann-arbor-to-self-reliance
"The assumption behind Transition Towns is that we’re reaching a convergence of three crises: 1) a moment when oil production can’t meet demand, forcing us to confront a future of dramatically lower energy use; 2) climate change, which requires a drastic reduction in carbon emissions; and 3) worldwide economic instability. The Transition Towns movement is all about preparing communities to retool for this future, and the 12-step program is an outline of how to do that."

MichaelMoore.com : Goodbye, GM ...by Michael Moore

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/message/index.php?messageDate=2009-06-01
"100 years ago this year, the founders of General Motors convinced the world to give up their horses and saddles and buggy whips to try a new form of transportation. Now it is time for us to say goodbye to the internal combustion engine. It seemed to serve us well for so long. We enjoyed the car hops at the A&W. We made out in the front -- and the back -- seat. We watched movies on large outdoor screens, went to the races at NASCAR tracks across the country, and saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time through the window down Hwy. 1. And now it's over. It's a new day and a new century. The President -- and the UAW -- must seize this moment and create a big batch of lemonade from this very sour and sad lemon. "

About Detroit Community Scrip

http://www.detroitscrip.org/About%20Detroit%20Cheers.htm
"There are two levels to the variety of retail participants. One, are those who simply accept Cheers as currency on a one to one with the US Dollar. The 3 Cheers note is worth 3 dollars; and change will be issued in us currency for purchases made with cheers when the cost of the item is less. The second are those who issue the currency and are identified on the tail side of the bill. The commitment of those who issue is that they will always keep in cash reserve the amount of their issue. Confidence in the notes are equal to the trust you have in the people behind them. The notes are expensive to produce and are as real as money, please do not treat them as paper, do not take them if you are not going to spend them. "

KalamaBrew hopes to have its video tour of the mines up on the blog soon. Check back, you don't want to miss it."

"I think Mike Kessler can actually do this. He’s already overcome the worst barrier to entry we faced when we were exploring a local coworking facility: the tendency to dilute your decisionmaking by being too communitarian. And I have a feeling he might even beat the second-worst barrier to entry: the cost of commercial real estate in downtown Ann Arbor."

"On Thursday evening, the second floor of Cottage Inn Pizza on William Street in downtown Ann Arbor was cram-packed with geeks and non-geeks alike. But it seemed like mostly geeks – propeller heads, techies, code-freaks, whatever term of endearment you prefer. They were there for ArbCamp 2008, a gathering meant to stimulate discussions around topics mutually agreed upon, on the fly at the event, and to promote connections in the tech community that might prove constructive. If the breaking news of the day – UM’s purchase of the old Pfizer site to establish a medical research hub – represents a big box approach to economic development, then ArbCamp 2008 is a grass-roots approach."

"In short, my view is that if GM can’t figure out ways to get their managers and executives to understand the experience of owning a car for the average person, if they can’t get rid of those jets, and if they can’t reduce the number of brands, and if they can’t make a host of other changes required to make them competitive, than my answer is “no, you can’t have our money.” "

"In February 1995, working in conjunction with nutritionists at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, I adopted a super fiber-rich diet which allowed me to successfully produce a single extruded excrement the exact length of my colon: 26 feet. I documented the extrusion at the Cranbrook-Kingswood High School Bowling Alley, Bloomfield Hills, MI, which offered a length of floor suitable for the process and measuring the results. The cathartic diet was supplemented by a high intake of Metamucil fiber substance. The weeklong endurance prior to the event was ensured by the employment of a plug specifically designed to curtail any premature excretions."

Design Sense, Local Logic

"While Shana Logic functions as a shopping portal, it sets itself apart from other online shopping venues by delivering products in a fun and creative way, starting with the online marketing (see shopping sections such as "yummy good" and "punk rock sass") and ending with the packaging (lime green bubble wrap, boxes decorated by hand with silly stickers and packed with a free magnet designed by Victor). The online store is as bold and colorful as much of the inventory is. To become a Shana Design product it must be cute, funny, silly, different. There is a heavy Japanese influence in the products, AKA modern craft or studio craft."
