Scenes from O’Reilly ETCon 2002 : Global Nerdy

https://www.globalnerdy.com/2026/01/11/scenes-from-oreilly-etcon-2002/
This little trove of photos is entirely Anil Dash’s fault. He recently made a blog post titled How Markdown Took Over the World with a “hero image” featuring a 2002-era iMac setup — the G4 model, which Jony Ive described as the answer to the question “What computer would the Jetsons have had?”

Dear Congress, It's No Longer OK To Not Know How The Internet Works | Motherboard

So it was as proponents of the Hollywood-funded bill curmudgeonly shot down all but two amendments proposed by its opponents, who fought to dramatically alter the document to preserve security and free speech on the net. But the chilling takeaway of this whole debacle was the irrefutable air of anti-intellectualism; that inescapable absurdity that we have members of Congress voting on a technical bill who do not posses any technical knowledge on the subject and do not find it imperative to recognize those who do.

Web Legend “TRON Guy” Banned from Seeing TRON: Legacy in Famed Suit - TIME NewsFeed

But apparently the staff at a Minnesota movie theater hadn't heard of him. They refused to let him watch TRON: Legacy while wearing his light-up suit. Maynard says he believes the staff thought it would be too "distracting." But when you're watching a movie with tons of flashing lights and a bleeping electronic soundtrack, are you really going to be easily distracted? We say this is an act of nerd injustice.

Renae Bair » Blog Archive » “My husband is a programmer; I have no idea what that means.”

"This always blows my mind. You’re married to someone, and you aren’t interested enough in the person to know anything about what they do with nearly 40-50% of their time, aside from their job title? Is it dangerous to draw a correlation between high divorce rates and the lack of interest that people have in their partners lives? It’s easy to fall in love with the “idea” of a person when you first meet them. But I think it would be hard to endure a lifetime of ups and downs, trials and tribulations and the everyday challenges that life throws at two people, if those partners didn’t have a truly vested interest in each other’s passions and life’s work. And if you don’t have even a basic understanding of what your spouse does with 40+hours of his/her week, then you’re not on a team."

Recycled Knowledge: Why Are PHBs Stupid?

"Scott Adams is not only a manager now, he has always been one by training: he was an economics major, not any kind of scientist or engineer, and he got an MBA before he worked with his first geek. He is extraordinarily observant (especially for an MBA, I add snarkily) and he actually does grasp how geeks think, but despite appearances he basically sees them from the outside. When I discovered this, the shock was so great that I started to see him as an outsider mocking my culture rather than an insider mocking its excesses (though to be sure Dilbert is harder on suits than on nerds), and I lost interest in the strip completely."

Accessing an IMAP email account using telnet :: bobpeers.com

http://bobpeers.com/technical/telnet_imap.php
"IMAP is an email protocol for organizing, storing and retrieving emails on a remote server. It was developed after POP and is a much more advanced system, one of the main differences being that all the mail is stored on the server so it remains accessible from many different locations. With POP you have to download the mail to your local computer in order to read it and therefore you cannot synchronize your mail across many different machines. It may be more complex than POP but there are still only a few core commands we need to know in order to access our mail on an IMAP server."

"You're smart, dammit. More importantly, you're not obsessed with impressing others. You are who you are, and you're proud of it. Maybe you scream it from the rafters, or maybe it's just in the privacy of your own home. Either way, you're comfortable in your own skin. You'll be comfortable in this heavyweight 100% cotton charcoal grey t-shirt, too. "

Nerds race across Azeroth IRL, nearly die from shame - Engadget

"Here are the facts: two dweebs thought it would be a good idea to hook up treadmills to their PCs, don brightly-colored wigs and cardboard swords, and race their avatars across about a mile of virtual turf by jogging in place with only a modicum of coordination and zero athletic ability."

Rands In Repose: The Nerd Handbook

"While I don’t know who you are or why in the world you chose a nerd for your companion, I do know that you are not a knowable system. I know that you are messy, just like your nerd. Being your own quirky self will be more than enough to present new and
