Have you ever hit the number keys while watching Youtube? That simple action jumps the video to different timestamps - and creative musicians have discovered you can use this like a primitive sampler. This observation sparked an idea. As someone who loves experimenting with drum machines like the Arturia Drumbrute, I wanted to take this Youtube "feature" and transform it into something musical. I built Youtube Sequencer using TypeScript and Redux to create a robust, reliable music-making tool that doesn't miss a beat. The result is a sequencer that turns any Youtube video into an instrument. Traditional sampling can be time-consuming, requiring you to download, trim, and import audio files. Youtube Sequencer removes these barriers - just paste a URL and start creating.

Between 2009 and 2012, iPhones had a built-in "Send to YouTube" button in the Photos app. Many of these uploads kept their default IMG_XXXX filenames, creating a time capsule of raw, unedited moments from random lives. Inspired by Ben Wallace, I made a bot that crawled YouTube and found 5 million of these videos! Watch them below, ordered randomly.

Apple uses the ‘IMG_XXXX’ naming convention for all images and videos captured on iOS devices, where XXXX is a unique sequence number. The first image you take is named “IMG_0001”, the second is “IMG_0002” and so on. During the Send to YouTube era of 2009 and 2012, the title of one’s YouTube video was defaulted to this naming convention. Unwitting content creators would then upload their videos on a public site with a barely-searchable name. To this day, there are millions of these videos.

The μWave is a hack involving an Arduino and a TouchPad taped to a microwave door, which plays YouTube clips perfectly matched to your cooking time. This Frankenstein uses the Arduino to send data from the microwave's seven-segment displays to a web server, which finds a highly-rated YouTube video of the right length. The web client running in the browser treats you to a video clip that ends right when your food is done, then optionally tweets or sends a text message. The hack was created by students at the University of Pennsylvania, where it won first place in the PennApps Hackathon. There are no stated plans for commercialization, but the team will present the project to Google as part of the grand prize.
