http://www.sega-16.com/2005/04/unofficial-shmups-glossary/
Bulletmagnet from the Shmups forum has compiled this awesome glossary of shmup terms, which is great for those just getting into the genre, as well as those with questions about what certain terms mean or are called. Some terms were also taken from the Shooter Lingo section of the now-defunct shmup site Starbase299.

If you buy the Special Edition, you'll be able to see these entirely practical outfits on the characters in an artbook, as well as on ... a pillowcase. "When we were thinking of putting together the Special Edition," Lu said, "we were trying to come up with things fans would like. We had this beautiful artwork with Mine Yoshizaki, so we wanted to do something interesting and fun that would show it off. Also, one of the Japanese special editions comes with a bedsheet, so our super hardcore fans can have a full bed set." See? Practical through and through.

"Hydorah is a game designed for classic shoot em up players, who still love clean designs and challenging adventuresThe whole game takes obvious influence from Gradius, Castlevania or R-Type, but also from other classics treated worse by the time: Turrican, Enforcer, Space Manbow, Hellfire, Guardian, Hydefos, Armalyte and many others..."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compile_(software_company)
"Compile was a Japanese video game company founded in 1983, originally named Programmers-3. Founded by Masamitsu Niitani (otherwise simply known as 'Moo'), they were responsible for developing some of the most colourful and popular action and puzzle games ever made, including their signature franchise, Puyo Puyo. Although they created games for many systems, they were noted for particularly strong support of the MSX and PC Engine, as well as a number of notable games on the NES and Sega Master System."

Wow, finally I know this thing's name. Friends and I were semi-obsessed with various Compile games in high school, and we'd doodle this thing from time to time. "Randar/Lander: Known by various different translation, Randar is this smiling blue thing with huge eyes. He's pretty much Compile's mascot, and appears in nearly every title. He heals you in Golvellius, sells you things in The Guardian Legend, and acts as nifty power-ups in many of the shooter titles. He even starred in a few small little RPGs."

Shred Nebula Review (Xbox 360)

http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1561/Shred-Nebula/p1
"At first glance, Shred Nebula looks like a quick cash-in on the current Geometry Wars craze. However, its unique control scheme—more akin to classic Asteroids—proves it has little in common with the popular dual-stick-controlled series. In fact, despite resembling an arcade shooter you would’ve controlled with a joystick and single button back in the day, its mechanics are fairly complex. Direction is steered with the left stick, but forward and reverse thrusters are powered with the left trigger and bumper, respectively. Toss in a variety of weapons, shields, and other spacecraft-enhancing abilities mapped to the rest of the gamepad’s bevy of buttons and triggers, and you’ve got a cockpit full of controls that’d make Buck Roger’s head spin.
