Sneak Peek: Start Your Own Radio Station — Veilamp

https://veilamp.com/blog/sneak-peek-start-your-own-radio-station
Here’s the part that makes it Veilamp: there’s no central media server. Your audio streams peer-to-peer over the Veilid network, end-to-end encrypted, straight from you to your listeners. We’re not in the middle. There’s no company relay logging who tuned in, no account, no cloud bill. It’s the same private, friends-first networking that powers sharing your library — we just taught it to carry a live program.

The Lost Joy of Music Piracy: WhatCD, Oink, and Spotify | Pigeons and Planes

https://www.pigeonsandplanes.com/read/music-piracy-what-cd-oink-nine-inch-nails-streaming?ref=sidebar
At its core, What.CD was much more than a torrent tracker—it was a community of dedicated music fans volunteering their time, effort, and knowledge to create a labor of love. While the internet has opened up new doors for musicians, the increasing corporatization and algorithmic takeover of online spaces has done irreparable damage to organic music discovery and independent communities. Rather than bringing about the financial stability that was supposedly impeded by piracy, the recording industry has offered meager artist payouts and a product with a sterilized user interface. Nearly ten years since their unexpected goodbye, the magical feeling of logging in to What.CD has yet to be replicated by any streaming service. Though my days of stealing music are well in the past, it’s clear that musicians are still being stolen from.

Playground builds on a large library of DSP algorithms our team has developed over many years. The AI layer interprets your prompt, then combines or adapts these building blocks to produce new effects. Under the hood, multiple specialised agents handle different steps for parsing your request, selecting the right algorithms, generating code, and running automated tests during and after creation. We also designed the infrastructure to stay flexible about AI providers, so we can evaluate different models over time and choose the best balance of quality, reliability, and cost as the technology evolves.

Rush is a Band Blog: Rush fan uncovers rare, early Presto rough cut demo cassette tape

https://www.rushisaband.com/blog/2026/02/21/6434/Rush-fan-uncovers-rare-early-Presto-rough-cut-demo-cassette-tape
Rush fan Mike Z recently acquired an old rough cut demo tape of Rush's Presto that had been discovered amongst the belongings of a former Alex Lifeson guitar tech who passed away (likely Jimmy Johnson). The old TDK cassette tape was labeled RUSH Rough mixes, and included the Le Studio logo and address/phone. With the help of fellow Rush fan Danny de Hoyos, the pair digitized the cassette and made it available on YouTube

Ladytron Submerge into Icy Cathode-Ray Bathed Depths With Video for “Kingdom Undersea” — New Album "Paradises" Announced — Post-Punk.com

https://post-punk.com/ladytron-submerge-into-an-icy-cathode-ray-glow-in-video-for-kingdom-undersea-new-album-paradises-announced/
The video was shot inside an analogue contraption originally built for those acid-house provocateurs, The KLF. You see Marnie, Hunt, Mira Aroyo, percussionist Peter Kelly, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Hunt framed inside a maze of glitches, static bursts, overlays, and televisions emitting distorted colour: five figures playing in a room that looks like the future the 1980s hallucinated after too many strobe blasts.

German Synthpop Act T.O.Y. Returns with Romantic New Single "Night & Day" — New Album "The Prophet" Announced! — Post-Punk.com

https://post-punk.com/german-synthpop-act-t-o-y-returns-with-romantic-new-single-night-day-new-album-the-prophet-announced/
It is wickedly romantic, trying to freeze time before the light breaks through. T.O.Y.’s Night & Day, from his upcoming album The Prophet, feels like a love letter written on the edge of dawn, when sleep still clings to your skin and reality hasn’t yet come knocking. The synths rise like fog over an empty street; the drums, clipped and clean, pulse with the same electricity that once ran through a smoky Berlin nightclub. It’s both ghost and groove, caught in the tension between staying lost and being found.

Gary Numan Unearths Lost Telekon-Era Track “Like a B-Film” for Album's 45th Anniversary Edition — Post-Punk.com

Numan’s instinct to move forward remains intact. This year, Beggars Banquet opens his archives once more for Telekon’s 45th anniversary: an expanded reissue featuring four previously unreleased recordings, including Like A B-Film, an unearthed relic from the original sessions. Early versions of Please Push No More, Aircrash Bureau, and I’m An Agent reveal a restless mind still at work, testing limits even within success.

Live Coding Techno With Strudel | Hackaday

https://hackaday.com/2025/10/16/live-coding-techno-with-strudel/
The super talented [Switch Angel] is an electronic music artist, with a few cool YouTube videos to show off their absolute nailing of how to live code with Strudel. For us mere mortals, Strudel is a JavaScript port of TidalCycles, which is an algorithmic music generator which supports live coding, i.e. the music that is passed down to the synthesizer changes on-the-fly as you manipulate the code. It’s magical to watch (and listen!) to how you can adapt and distort the music to your whims just by tweaking a few lines of code: no compilation steps, hardly any debugging and instant results.

Live coding – an interview with Lizzie Wilson (Digital Selves) - Music Hackspace

https://musichackspace.org/live-coding-an-interview-with-lizzie-wilson-digital-selves/
The live coding scene has been growing over the years. Despite this, for many the idea of watching someone create music in code might not have an immediate appeal, though live coders are now playing at top night clubs, experimental music venues, and festivals. As the world becomes more code literate it is likely to become more popular.

Lizzie Wilson Research Page

https://lwlsn.github.io/research.html
My thesis explores the integration of autonomous agents into live coding systems to co-create music with human performers based on affective response, aiming to enhance musical expression and collaboration between humans and machines. By developing prototypes and conducting experiments, the studies conducted demonstrate that autonomous agents can facilitate the emergence of new musical ideas and patterns. The research outlines the creation of an Affective Live Coding Autonomous Agent (ALCAA) and a Markovian Agent for code generation (that leverages Haskell's strictly typed system) named Tidal Fuzz, which together form a hybrid system combining affective and computational models for generating expressive music through code manipulation. The thesis also proposes modifications the Consensual Assessment Technique for live coders, as a means of evaluating the creative outcomes of this collaborative process, acknowledging the subjective nature of creativity and ensuring nuanced evaluation.

Dancing In The Datacenter

https://youtubesequencer.com/about
Have you ever hit the number keys while watching Youtube? That simple action jumps the video to different timestamps - and creative musicians have discovered you can use this like a primitive sampler. This observation sparked an idea. As someone who loves experimenting with drum machines like the Arturia Drumbrute, I wanted to take this Youtube "feature" and transform it into something musical. I built Youtube Sequencer using TypeScript and Redux to create a robust, reliable music-making tool that doesn't miss a beat. The result is a sequencer that turns any Youtube video into an instrument. Traditional sampling can be time-consuming, requiring you to download, trim, and import audio files. Youtube Sequencer removes these barriers - just paste a URL and start creating.

The Math Behind The Music Of The 80s | Hackaday

https://hackaday.com/2024/12/11/the-math-behind-the-music-of-the-80s/
Part of the reason the DX7 was so revolutionary was that it was among the first accessible synthesizers that was fully digital, meaning could play more than one note at a time since expensive analog circuitry didn’t need to be replicated for multiple keys. But it also generated its tones by using frequency modulation of sine waves in a way that allowed many signals to be combined to form different sounds. While most popular musicians of the 80s used one of the preset sounds of the synthesizer, it could produce an incredible range of diverse sounds if the musician was willing to dig a bit into the programming of this unique instrument.

Trackers, video games, soldering irons and bitter rivalries: 5 reasons why the '80s was the ultimate decade for computer music-making | MusicRadar

When it comes to music production, the '80s will probably be remembered for great synths, rubbish synths, great music and terrible music. What it probably won’t be remembered for is its contribution to the history of computer music making. This is, frankly, wrong. Here's why…

The Cure: Songs of a Lost World, review: the best thing since their debut

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/music/news/the-cure-songs-of-a-lost-world-review/
Surprisingly, this is not a depressing listening experience. There is something so cathartically bleak about Songs of a Lost World, so epically pessimistic and emotionally wrought, that the results are perversely invigorating, transmuting powerful feelings of loss, grief, anxiety, anger and self-doubt into a work of such grandeur it leaves the listener strangely exhilarated and uplifted. Like shaking a fist at an approaching hurricane, it is an album that’s very existence evokes defiance of terrible forces of destruction. In embracing darkness, Smith offers a potent Cure for the blues.

http://yearofmixtapes.blogspot.com/2010/03/week-42-year-in-rave1992-part-1.html
Ok, so 1992 was pretty much the best year ever for music. The Rave scene was blowing up, and every week it seemed like dozens of amazing records were coming out—way more than little 10-year-old me could buy. This was the year that the UK really took the reins from Belgium & the States w/r/t dance music, and when the idea of "rave music" as a distinct thing from house/techno started to emerge.

Vocalist/keyboardist Sarah Barthel sings hauntingly through an MF-104Z Analog Delay while playing not one, but two Moog synthesizers. Her left hand is in charge of the Minimoog Voyager Select Series providing big fat bass lines; the Little Phatty Stage II is arpeggiating in latch mode throughout the entire song. It is also being MIDI synced with the drum machine that percussionist Tim Oakley is performing on. In addition to the drum machine, Tim uses the Minimoog Voyager XL for a percussive sound. Meanwhile, guitarist/vocalist Josh Carter covers both the full sustain and the mute modes of the Moog Guitar. Going through an MF-104Z Analog Delay and the MF-102 Ring Modulator, Josh creates an ethereal backdrop with the tremolo arm of the Moog Guitar..

And then Mike Turner left. And no matter how many times the band’s members insist his departure didn’t matter all that much, the group’s legacy has subsequently been divided into The Years With Mike Turner and The Years Without Mike Turner. To this day, it’s hard to put a finger on what exactly it is that changed. Gravity, the 2002 album that brought Our Lady Peace its most mainstream success to date behind the infectious “Somewhere Out There”, was guitarist Steve Mazur’s first go-around with the band, and combined with Bob Rock’s production tricks, the effort showcased a decidedly harder sound with a more polished edge. So, you can point to that when trying to figure out where the change came from, if you’d like. But after the disappointing and rushed (their words, not mine) Healthy in Paranoid Times, they erased Rock from the equation and yet Burn Burn, Our Lady Peace’s first DIY-fueled album, still didn’t quite measure up to those first four records.

Grimes (musician) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimes_(musician)
In 2009, Boucher and her then-boyfriend from Tennessee constructed a 20-foot houseboat, named the "Velvet Glove Cast in Iron", with the intention to sail it down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans. The cargo included chickens, a typewriter, 20 pounds of potatoes and a gifted copy of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. However, the chickens caught eastern equine encephalitis virus and perished soon into the trip. Boucher and her companion adopted the names "Varuschka" and "Zelda Xox" for the trip.[14] Due to engine trouble and subsequent harassment from the Minnesota police, the journey was cut short and the houseboat and chickens were impounded.[14] Their diet consisted mainly of potatoes.[15]

Kantor’s ambitious dinner was a testament to his Rush fandom (the New York state native fell in love with the band as a junior-high-school student in the early ’80s and never looked back), and also his latest foray in a culinary crusade. He hopes to help bring what he calls “thinky” food — reminiscent, let’s say, of a well-wrought Neil Peart lyric — to a city whose gastronomic endeavours, he finds, veer closer to the Top 40.

UNDO DEL IUMA « ASCII by Jason Scott

http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/3613
6 years ago, John Gilmore (yes, That John Gilmore) saw that IUMA was in a zombie state and very unlikely to ever get out of the ICU. So he grabbed a copy of all he could – which wasn’t all of it, of course, but it was a hell of a lot of it. He stored them on some backup tapes, and as the site went down, disappeared, and faded into the mists of memory, he looked for a chance to have someone get a copy up somewhere. I was that person.

IUMA (Internet Underground Music Archive) Collection : Free Audio : Download & Streaming : Internet Archive

http://archive.org/details/iuma-archive
The Internet Underground Music Archive was better known by the acronym IUMA. The IUMA was started in 1993 by three students at the University of California at Santa Cruz: Jeff Patterson, Jon Luini and Rob Lord. The three men worked together to create an online music archive that would help musicians and bands who weren't signed by a major label. The site allowed these unsigned artists to upload files and send them to fans. The site also enabled the artists the opportunity to talk with their fans. The IUMA was first part of the Usenet newsgroups.

Founded in 1985, the DNA Lounge (Dance Not Art) has provided live music acts as well as DJs and special events to the San Francisco area, and is one of the longer-surviving clubs of its kind. In 1999, the club was purchased by Jamie Zawinski, remodeled extensively, and re-opened in 2001. Since that time, it has hosted thousands of performances, all of which have been broadcast over the web and available for a short time after the event. These broadcasts have been downloaded over the last decade and compiled into this archive of shows, matched with information from the DNA Lounge website.

Kevin J. Anderson will novelize Rush's new album

http://io9.com/5884531/kevin-j-anderson-will-novelize-rushs-new-album
Prolific novelist Kevin J. Anderson has made no secret of his love for prog rock — and now he's taking his prog-rock fixation to the next level. He announced on his Facebook page that he's writing the novel version of Rush's new album, Clockwork Angels. Writes Anderson: After dropping hints for a while, finally the big announcement, a new project unlike any other I've ever done...and something that I consider very cool. Most of you are aware of my long-standing friendship with Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist from the legendary rock band Rush, as well as how much Rush has influenced my work. My first novel Resurrection, Inc. was closely inspired by the Rush album Grace Under Pressure, and I can point to dozens of other novels and stories that bear a clear Rush influence. For more than twenty years, Neil and I have wanted to collaborate on something MAJOR, a way we could tie together our imaginations, and at last that's happening. I'm writing the novelization of Rush's forthcoming album Clockwork Angels, their first new CD in five years. Imagine if someone had written the novel of The Wall, Tommy, or Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band when those classic albums were released. For Rush fans, CLOCKWORK ANGELS is that project. I worked together with Neil to flesh out the epic story told over the course of the music, as well as the artist Hugh Syme whose paintings fill the CD booklet. In a young man's quest to follow his dreams, he is caught between the grandiose forces of order and chaos. He travels across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy, with lost cities, pirates, anarchists, exotic carnivals, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. To whet your appetite, Rush released the first two tracks, Caravan and BU2B - listen to those songs to get an idea of the story's beginning. I'm writing the chapters now, incorporating the lyrics into the narrative, and having a fantastic time. More details to come, but for now-to quote a line from Caravan: "I can't stop thinking big." Apple II drum sequencer surfaces for chiptune composers -- Engadget

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/30/apple-ii-drum-sequencer-surfaces-for-chiptune-composers
No, this isn't a recycled news item from the 1980s -- it's 2011, and MJ Mahon and 8 Bit Weapon have just announced the release of the Apple II DMS Drummer, a wavetable-based drum sequencer for Apple II-era machines. The monophonic synth reproduces eight drum sounds like bass, snare, rim shot, hand clap, tom, hat open, hat closed and "lazer," along with a sequencer that lets you plug in up to 16 drum patterns across 256 slots. Seems like just the thing for chiptune composers hankering for a way to make authentic eight-bit drum tracks using vintage Apple hardware. System requirements call for an Apple IIe, IIc, IIc+ or IIgs with 80-column capability and a 5.25-inch floppy drive -- you know, pretty modern stuff. A limited demo version is available, but if that doesn't satisfy, you can either buy it on a floppy for $14.95 or download a .dsk disk image for $9.95. http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/25/10-things-that-really-happened-on-a-very-gaga-thanksgiving
Perhaps some time after your Thanksgiving dinner, possibly in a stuporous, tryptophan-induced state, you turned on your television to see a glistening, eyebrowless humanoid engaging in acts for your ostensible entertainment. And while you may have concluded this was all a dream or a hallucination, let us assure you that “A Very Gaga Thanksgiving” was an actual holiday special that featured the pop star Lady Gaga and was indeed broadcast on the ABC network.

Over 200 labels abandon streaming music and their future | The Verge

http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/18/2571658/200-labels-leave-spotify
NPD Group and NARM (the Music Business Association) recently conducted a study, which concluded that streaming music is damaging to record sales. That information has now caused distributor STHoldings to withdraw all of its music content — that's over 200 labels' worth — from Spotify, Simfy, Rdio, and Napster. STHoldings reported that only four of its labels said they wanted to continue streaming their content. It's a case of confirming exactly what some publishers want to hear: cheaper, user-friendly streaming services might be encroaching on the cushy sales models of years past. The reaction is reminiscent of the industry's bitterly reluctant adoption of the mp3 format in the heyday of CD supremacy, and we all know how that turned out.

Forget your Google Musics and Spotifys -- J Mascis, indie rock's favorite guitar-shredding gray haired curmudgeon and the rest of Dinosaur Jr. are stepping into the format time machine to reissue their first three LPs on cassette. Yep, Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me and Bug will once again be heard the way they were meant to be: on the terrible, tiny speakers of your dusty old RadioShack tape deck. The three tapes are being sold as the Cassette Trilogy, a $39 screen-printed box set, limited to 500 copies -- one for every working tape player in America. The box set follows the cassette release of 1988's Bug this summer. You can pick the box up online now, for the rock and roll luddite on your holiday shopping list.

An Open Love Letter to My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless | Underwire | Wired.com

http://www.wired.com/underwire/2011/11/my-bloody-valentine-loveless
“I just kind of found my own way, and my own feel, my own way of playing,” Shields said of his ax modulations in Mike McGonigal’s book-length analysis of Loveless from 2007. “I found that if there was only one guitar track whilst the vocals were going, split between different amps and mics, the sound was bigger, especially when you use open strings and tunings and the tremolo arm. I didn’t have to consciously think about it; I was able to express this constant feeling of expression. It’s hard to explain the sound of the guitar bending. What you hear is what it is between the sound.”

The DRM graveyard: A brief history of digital rights management in music | opensource.com

http://opensource.com/life/11/11/drm-graveyard-brief-history-digital-rights-management-music
There are more than a few reasons digital rights management (DRM) has been largely unsuccessful. But the easiest way to explain to a consumer why DRM doesn't work is to put it in terms he understands: "What happens to the music you paid for if that company changes its mind?" It was one thing when it was a theoretical question. Now it's a historical one. Rhapsody just had the next in a line of DRM music services to go--this week the company told its users than anyone with RAX files has unil November 7 to back them up in another format or lose them the next time they upgrade their systems.

Blaster Beam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Blaster_Beam
"The Blaster Beam is a concept electronic musical instrument consisting of a 12 to 18-foot (5.5 m) long metal beam strung with numerous tensed wires under which are mounted electric guitar pickups which can be moved to alter the sound produced. The instrument is played by striking or plucking the strings with fingers, sticks, pipes or even large objects such as artillery shell casings. The instrument produces a very distinctive bass tone, the sound of which is often described as 'dark' or 'sinister'."

"The Echo Nest is a music intelligence company founded by Tristan Jehan and Brian Whitman, who met at the MIT Media Lab while they were both getting their PhDs in music understanding and synthesis research. The company has since grown to a small but insane team of developers, designers, musicians and business people all housed in a cozy office in Davis Square, Somerville, MA, USA. We grow an intelligence platform that automatically reads about and listens to the entire world of music for developers to build search, personalization and interactive music applications. "

Countercomplex: Defining Computationally Minimal Art (Or, taking the "8" out of "8-Bit")

http://www.pelulamu.net/countercomplex/computationally-minimal-art
"The defining element is LOW COMPUTATIONAL COMPLEXITY, as expressed in all aspects of the audiovisual system: the complexity of the platform (i.e. the number of transistors or logic gates in the hardware), the complexity of the software (i.e. the length in bits of the program code and static data), as well as the time complexity (i.e. how many state changes the computational tasks require). A more theoretical approach would eliminate the differentiation of software and hardware and talk about description/program length, memory complexity and time complexity."

"The Pythagorean Lambdoma Harmonic Keyboard, designed by mathemetician Barbara Hero, is an unusual MIDI controller that’s based on ancient concepts and fundamental harmonic relationships between notes. The keyboard is based on the Lambdoma Matrix, a mathematical grid attributed to the philosopher Pythagoras. The Matrix plots whole-number ratios, with whole numbers along on side (1,2,3,4….) and their inverse fractions (1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4….) along the other."

M3U2iTunes simply creates a single playlist named "M3U Internet Stream" and places all songs from the downloaded m3u playlist into the M3U Internet Stream playlist."

"The producer invited some of the mavericks of '80s electronic music, including Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby and Erasure's Vince Clarke, to give his tunes a spin of their own. Listen to their revamps below. After all of those years, these three still have a fine knack for adding an eclectic flair to contemporary pop tunes. I'm especially digging Vince Clarke's bouncy remix of "Falling Down," and I must say that Howard Jones remix of "Devastated" is very reminiscent of a Lady GaGa hit. You can tell it comes from the same production house."

"The iTunes LP experience is accomplished with HTML 4.01, CSS and JS. The interface feels very Flash-like, but there is no trace of it. The CSS animations are elaborate and smooth. ... As a music fan, and as a web developer, I couldn’t be more pleased with the new iTunes LP offering. If your audience is significantly Apple-oriented (e.g. a site about Mac rumors or a popular iPhone app) this proves that you can provide an incredible experience using only JavaScript and some proposed CSS3 properties."

"While over the years there has been no shortage of Beatles merchandise, some of it crass, the decision to release the game on the same date as the new CDs is, as well as an irresistible marketing tactic, a signal that the game is meant to be an authentic part of the band’s canon (as is McCartney’s decision to show footage from the game during his current American tour). The Beatles are positioning themselves to once again play a significant role in the evolution of popular music — this time by embracing interactivity. "

Harmonix and MTV Games were asked about including a similar feature and responded that they were interested, but wouldn't release it till they could do it correctly. Looks like that time is approaching as Billboard has word that they will be releasing "Rock Band Network" which will allow users to create, upload, and even sell their own songs. When's it coming? People, young and old, share songs with each other – by singing or playing them - in a variety of ways and settings, through a variety of technologies and media or other manner of accompaniment (as well as a capella). Songs as recordings are not fundamentally different in this respect. Since the advent of recorded media, people have shared songs in this form as well: played for each other in private and public settings, on personally distributed mixes (mixed tapes / CDs), and, in the age of mp3s, as files sent via email, IM (instant message), torrent, third-party hosting site, or any manner of online sites and services. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1877372,00.html
"If you haven't been listening to pop radio in the past few months, you've missed the rise of two seemingly opposing trends. In a medium in which mediocre singing has never been a bar to entry, a lot of pop vocals suddenly sound great. Better than great: note- and pitch-perfect, as if there's been an unspoken tightening of standards at record labels or an evolutionary leap in the development of vocal cords. At the other extreme are a few hip-hop singers who also hit their notes but with a precision so exaggerated that on first listen, their songs sound comically artificial, like a chorus of '50s robots singing Motown."

"The source of a spoken sample used in the song "B-Boys Makin' with the Freak Freak" has been a topic of discussion in the Beastie Boys fan community since the release of Ill Communication, the album on which the song appears, in 1994. Uncredited on the album, the sample -- referred to as "the mashed potatoes sample" by fans -- has been a mystery. Fans have wondered and argued about who the comedian that says, "Shit, if this is gonna be that kind of party, I'm gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes" is."

Weird Al: Forefather of the YouTube Spoof

http://www.wired.com/entertainment/theweb/magazine/16-10/ff_weirdal
"Much like the big-name artists he once so expertly spoofed, Yankovic now inspires not just imitators but also competitors. He'll soon commence work on his 13th studio album, which will have to compete against his own singsongy progeny—the amateur satirists who can devise, record, and edit their own parodies in days, if not hours. To make matters more complicated, whereas Yankovic could once mine such inexhaustible icons as Jackson and Nirvana for laughs, he now has to contend with the likes of Jessica Simpson or Kevin Federline—celebrities who are more or less already self-parodies. Being a music satirist in 2008 is a bit like being a political cartoonist after the Harding administration: too many easy targets, too few sacred idols."
