On May 4, 1984, Milton Bradley, a leading producer of board games for 124 years, agreed to sell itself to Hasbro. Changes in the way people played games in the 80s, especially kids, put pressure on the company. In this blog post, I’ll explain how changing times led Milton Bradley to make a transformational bet at the worst possible time that ultimately sunk the maker of the game Battleship, and what happened to what was left of Milton Bradley.

1984 Toys “R” Us Christmas Sale Circular - The Retroist

https://www.retroist.com/p/1984-toys-r-us-christmas-sale-circular
Nowadays, I still enjoy looking at the old relics of sales past. They are wonderful historical artifacts and they take me right back to when I was a kid. So, I would like to share with you a Toys “R” Us circular from 1984. It was published right after December of that year. Like most of their sales offering during these years, it promised that their “prices will be no higher through Dec. 25th.” So no matter when you shop at the store this month, this is what you would have paid. Let’s jump in and look at some of the highlights on each page.

In prolonged conversations, Kumma also showed a penchant for going into explicit detail about sexual kinks, and even introduced the topic of sexual roleplay without being prompted to do so, along with telling a curious researcher posing as a child all about "teacher-student roleplay" and how spanking can play a part in such activities. "All of the toys also weighed in on other topics that parents might prefer to talk with their kids about first before the AI toy does," PIRG noted," the report says. "Those topics included religion, along with sex and "the glory of dying in battle in Norse Mythology."

Laser Cut Acrylic Provides Movie-Style Authentication | Hackaday

https://hackaday.com/2025/02/12/laser-cut-acrylic-provides-movie-style-authentication/
If you’ve seen Crimson Tide, or the first few minutes of WarGames, you might already know what this post is about. Both films prominently make use of a one-time authentication device which the user snaps in half to reveal a card that has some secret code printed on it — and as it turns out, there are at least two different projects that aim to replicate the props used in the movies.

Knock Off: The Battle for Imagination

https://knockoffthegame.com/
The game’s setting is a truly unique twist on the genre, featuring action figure toys engaged in friendly battles within a young boy’s bedroom. These battles are fueled by the imagination of children, creating a hidden world where these toys come to life. The plot intensifies with the introduction of a powerful new toy, whose elitist views lead to a head-to-head clash with the older knock-off toys. The destiny of imagination rests in your hands.

Mini Halloween McBuckets by JRSly

It seemed burgers were just a little juicier and fries were just a little saltier when they came served in these. And then you got to hang on to them and fill them with candy on Halloween night! Available in my Etsy storeBegging your parents to buy you a Happy Meal has been a time honored tradition for decades, but kids growing up in the '80s and '90s know the pestering was even more necessary in October when the wonderful pumpkin buckets appeared. It seemed burgers were just a little juicier and fries were just a little saltier when they came served in these. And then you got to hang on to them and fill them with candy on Halloween night! Most of us may have grown out of eating happy meals and trick-or-treating, but these nostalgic, iconic designs can live on as small ornaments perfect for decorating a desk or mantle. The buckets have been faithfully recreated, measured from a real bucket to get the right proportions and profile but tweaked just enough to be easy to print without supports. The memorable pumpkin-ribbed lids with the little button on top are removable and the handles swing satisfyingly. The face designs were carefully redrawn exactly from photos, the witch even has the sneaky spider hiding in the back amidst her hair. There are two variations available, if you opt for the set with holes, you can add a string of LED lights and really make them pop!I've found this size seems to work really well without needing any supports and is a good size to use with standard LED lights. Any larger and you'll likely get some drooping in some of the face elements and the rim of the bucket. It might be fun to make larger, candy dish sized buckets, but I haven't experimented with going that big. The inside of the lids, without supports will probably look a mess, but who really cares. right? The handles might look a bit precarious but I'm able to print these, and even smaller, without a brim or raft just by slowing down my speeds a bit. They are small and only take a few minutes anyway, may as well slow things down and give them the best chance for success. Once printed, trim the middle support piece away,as shown in the picture above, and bend the handle just a bit to get it to pop into the bucket holes. Don't trim away too much or the posts will be too short and the handle may slip out of the bucket easily. Try using cjgkun's Light Clips to help secure your lights inside the buckets!

The 5 Best Toys of All Time | GeekDad | Wired.com

http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2011/01/the-5-best-toys-of-all-time/all/1
Here at GeekDad we review a lot of products — books, toys, gadgets, software — and I know it’s impossible for most parents to actually afford all of the cool stuff that gets written up. Heck, most of us can’t afford it either, and we’re envious of the person who scored a review copy of a cool board game or awesome gizmo. (Disclosure: that person is probably me.) So while we love telling you about all the cool stuff that’s out there, I understand that as parents we all have limited budgets and we sometimes need help narrowing down our wishlists.

Tinkertoys were created in 1914 by Charles H. Pajeau and Robert Pettit in Evanston, Illinois. Pajeau, designed the toy after seeing children play with pencils and empty spools of thread. It did not take long for the toys to catch on and after 2 years they had sold millions of their sets.

Robotic bear pillow stops your snoring by gently mauling your face (video) -- Engadget

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/16/robotic-bear-pillow-stops-your-snoring-by-gently-mauling-your-fa
Looking to stop snoring? What you need is Jusui-Kun, a robot bear that paws your face while you're sleeping. Okay, it's more of a "gentle tickling," according to the bear's creators. The key is to get the snorer sleeping on the pillow to move his or her head from side to side. Jusui-Kun has a built-in mic to detect the sleeper's snoring, while an equally cuddly hand monitor detects blood oxygen levels, letting the bear know when to issue one of its loving face swipes. Video after the break. What could go wrong?

DIY: How To Hack a Nerf Vulcan to Fire 500 Rounds a Minute

"In order to accomplish this feat, the guys from Manapotions increased the voltage to the firing motor using 2 x 9.6v battery packs. More juice equals a faster spinning motor. A faster spinning motor means that toy darts will come down on your enemies like rain. As an added bonus, they equipped the gun with a sweet LED round counter and a slick paint job. Seriously folks, this thing is like the A-bomb of office warfare. And the best part is that it is a cheap upgrade. Hit the link for complete instructions on how to do it yourself. "

Marshall Alexander

"Growing up in the seventies and eighties, my childhood memories basically consist of videogames, bright plastic toys and TV cartoons. Any time that was left I spent drawing and programming games for my Commodore 64. At a later age a few of my childhood dreams became a reality when I temporarily moved to Melbourne, where I worked as a videogame programmer, did oil-painting in a studio and had my work displayed in one of the local galleries. After a course in Graphic Design I made a career-switch and became a graphic designer/illustrator. Currently back in The Netherlands I work at a small design company and spend my spare time illustrating my childhood memories and designing papertoys. I specialize in one-piece papertoys that consist of a single flat piece of paper, which by intricate folding is transformed into a 3-dimensional model."

Design Sense, Local Logic

"While Shana Logic functions as a shopping portal, it sets itself apart from other online shopping venues by delivering products in a fun and creative way, starting with the online marketing (see shopping sections such as "yummy good" and "punk rock sass") and ending with the packaging (lime green bubble wrap, boxes decorated by hand with silly stickers and packed with a free magnet designed by Victor). The online store is as bold and colorful as much of the inventory is. To become a Shana Design product it must be cute, funny, silly, different. There is a heavy Japanese influence in the products, AKA modern craft or studio craft."
