ArtLung: Owning my own bookmarks over 20 years ~ 31 Oct 2024

https://artlung.com/blog/2024/10/31/owning-my-own-bookmarks-over-20-years/
I wrote code (in PHP) to import my old bookmarks. And you didn’t misread that, it’s 28,000 links over the last 20 years. They come from my original links blog, and from Delicious, and from Instapaper, and from Twitter back when I backfilled those shared links into Pinboard, which I then backfilled into my link blog database. It’s a lot of things, but really, it’s straightforward from a programming point of view. It’s a simple POST to the REST API which Linkding provides by default. I have shared most of the code I wrote as a Gist in GitHub. It includes code in PHP to convert exported CSV from Instapaper to a JSON format that my poster code can use. And over the last 2 days and over many hours, every few seconds a link would be posted. And as of now, it’s finished.

The Fans Are All Right (Pinboard Blog)

http://blog.pinboard.in/2011/10/the_fans_are_all_right
I learned a lot about fandom couple of years ago in conversations with my friend Britta, who was working at the time as community manager for Delicious. She taught me that fans were among the heaviest users of the bookmarking site, and had constructed an edifice of incredibly elaborate tagging conventions, plugins, and scripts to organize their output along a bewildering number of dimensions. If you wanted to read a 3000 word fic where Picard forces Gandalf into sexual bondage, and it seems unconsensual but secretly both want it, and it's R-explicit but not NC-17 explicit, all you had to do was search along the appropriate combination of tags (and if you couldn't find it, someone would probably write it for you). By 2008 a whole suite of theoretical ideas about folksonomy, crowdsourcing, faceted infomation retrieval, collaborative editing and emergent ontology had been implemented by a bunch of friendly people so that they could read about Kirk drilling Spock.

Packrati.us = Twitter + Delicious

http://packrati.us
This is what I wish Delicious had done with Twitter. pinboard.in has this built-in, by the way. "This site provides a simple bookmarking service. We follow your twitter feed, and whenever one of your tweets contains URLs, we add them to your delicious.com bookmarks. Optionally, bookmark URLs in @replies to you. We'll even add a delicious tag identifying the sender if you like."

Pinboard Blog

"Our technical goals are to never lose data, be very fast, and favor boring and faded technologies where possible. A rule of thumb that has worked well for me is that if I'm excited to play around with something, it probably doesn't belong in production."

From Delicious to Mozilla at Spindrop

http://spindrop.us/2009/05/26/from-delicious-to-mozilla
Welcome aboard, Dave! "Today I said my good-byes to Delicious.com and Yahoo! and tonight I went to the Addons Meetup @ Mozilla to get a sneak peak at what I'll be working on in less than two weeks. ... I'm also happy to be joining an organization where everything is open sourced and available for comment. So I'm hoping to post a lot more on some of the cool tricks I do at Mozilla"

joshua's blog: on url shorteners

http://joshua.schachter.org/2009/04/on-url-shorteners.html
"So there are clear benefits for both the service (low cost of entry, potentially easy profit) and the linker (the quick rush of popularity). But URL shorteners are bad for the rest of us.I feel that shorteners are bad for the ecosystem as a whole. But what can be done to improve the situation?"

Rands In Repose: A Del.icio.us Interview

http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2004/12/03/a_delicious_interview.html
Do you remember the days when del.icio.us had 30k users and rapid feature development? "The original headline for this article hit me last week in a post-Turkey haze… laying on the couch… staring at the ceiling in the living room — “Why Del.icio.us is more important than Google”. Let’s hear it for SENSATIONALISM! Woo-hoo!"

Recent system:has:shortcut Bookmarks on Delicious

http://delicious.com/tag/system:has:shortcut
"Recent system:has:shortcut Bookmarks" Still one of my favorite hidden Delicious features, partially because I wrote a version of it. Essentially a server-side rendition of Firefox's keyword shortcuts. Bookmark something tagged shortcut:foo, include a %s placeholder in the URL, then search for "!foo bar" and be redirected to the bookmarked URL with %s replaced by "bar". Good for search engine URLs and other command-line-esque URLs. It becomes especially handy if you have Delicious search installed in your search bar. This particular bookmark shows other bookmarks tagged with the shortcut: convention

How Yahoo dropped the del.icio.us ball with a pointless 3 year rewrite (from mod_perl to PHP) : reddit.com

http://www.reddit.com/comments/6v4yw/how_yahoo_dropped_the_delicious_ball_with_a
I'm on pretty much the same page as Joshua. I was amazed it launched, which is a credit to the remaining team of heroes. It'll be interesting to see what happens now—given a 2-3 year innovation time-debt, a brand-new bespoke infrastructure, and a load of enqueued we'll-fix-it-laters. Selected joshu quotes: "I think the open question now is whether the remaining team will be able to innovate or be stuck in complicated codebase hell. ... I have significant regret over what ended up happening with Delicious. We could have gone so much farther. ... engineering was focused on the rewrite so nobody had time to replace the old search engine ... They had the technology, but the relevant staff had higher priorities."

Offer Personal Content Recommendations for Free with New MyBlogLog Plug-in - ReadWriteWeb

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/personal_content_recommendations.php
Hey, Delicious should finally do something like this: "When a MyBlogLog visitor visits a site with the plug-in running, the system looks at the tags that user provided for their interests when they created their MyBlogLog account. It then finds blog posts with the same categories or tags and serves them up in a widget. "

osunick · Delicious 2 = new hotness

"To me this is a great moment as I spent virtually all of the last 18 months preparing for this launch. While I did my best to make sure that my absence didn’t affect the launch, I still wondered if there was some loose end that I forgot to tie. If there was, someone must have caught it because the entire thing unfolded beautifully!"

A VC: delicious search

"Here is to hoping Yahoo! figures out how to better leverage Delicious without killing it in the process. They have done an admirable job in not killing Flickr, and lets see if they can do the same for Delicious. In the meantime, kudos to Joshua and the D

Readeroo

http://www.monsur.com/projects/readeroo
"Readeroo is a simple Firefox plugin that lets you "queue up" articles you might not have the time to read now, and then access them later (the name comes from "Reader" and "Queue"). It is powered by del.icio.us."

del.icio.us: overdue new year's resolutions

http://blog.del.icio.us/blog/2007/02/overdue_new_yea.html#comments
"We've been busy: since our announcement in september of our millionth signup, another half-million users have joined the fun. And because of this, we've been more quiet then I would like, and I want to apologize."

del.icio.us: hello world!

http://blog.del.icio.us/blog/2006/07/hello_world.html
"Hello world - I'm Les Orchard. I’ve been a long-time fan and user of del.icio.us, developer of del.icio.us mash-ups, and recent author of Hacking del.icio.us. The obvious next step in this evolution is to be fully assimilated into the del.icio.us cub

dejalicious.js

http://rose.kleinfelter.com/slant/technology/greasemonkey/dejalicious.user.js?password=asdf2fdsa&username=jdblacklung
'It is similar in function to the "Familiar Taste" greasemonkey script, except this on // uses cached bookmarks, where Familiar Taste hit del.icio.us for each page you loaded in your browser (and got banned for that reason).'

del.icio.us: tags for two

http://blog.del.icio.us/blog/2005/07/tags_for_two.html
'We've just begun rolling out support for tagging items for others. To do so, use "for:username" where username is the name of the user you want to send the item to.'
