Labs/Ubiquity/Ubiquity 0.1 Author Tutorial - MozillaWiki

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Ubiquity/Ubiquity_0.1_Author_Tutorial
The great power of Ubiquity—from a developer standpoint—is how easy it is to create commands. With only a couple of lines of Javascript, Ubiquity enables even casual web developers to drastically enhance the features of the browser. From an 8-line command to insert a contact's email address in any text field, to a 50-line Twitter integration, this tutorial walks you through the process of being generative with Ubiquity.

webdev.stephband.info

http://webdev.stephband.info/parallax.html
"Parallax turns a selected element into a 'window', or viewport, and all its children into absolutely positioned layers that can be seen through the viewport. These layers move in response to the mouse, and, depending on their dimensions (and options for layer initialisation), they move by different amounts, in a parallaxy kind of way."

ThinkGeek :: Nerd Glasses

http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/generic/933c
"You're smart, dammit. More importantly, you're not obsessed with impressing others. You are who you are, and you're proud of it. Maybe you scream it from the rafters, or maybe it's just in the privacy of your own home. Either way, you're comfortable in your own skin. You'll be comfortable in this heavyweight 100% cotton charcoal grey t-shirt, too. "

Cross-Browser.com

http://cross-browser.com
Wow, "X" - what an unsearchably-named framework. "X is a collection of loosely-bound, cross-browser, Javascript functions and objects. It is intended to be a resource from which you pick and choose - you do not have to include the entire library in your application. It contains core DOM/Style functions, unobtrusive enhancements, utility functions, objects such as menus and tab panels, and also has some experimental stuff. I've been developing this library since 2001 (I started its predecessor around 1999). Thanks to thousands of people like yourself X has been extensively tested on a wide range of operating systems and browsers. Thanks to your contributions X continues to improve, grow and evolve."

Nerds race across Azeroth IRL, nearly die from shame - Engadget

http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/26/nerds-race-across-azeroth-irl-nearly-die-from-shame
"Here are the facts: two dweebs thought it would be a good idea to hook up treadmills to their PCs, don brightly-colored wigs and cardboard swords, and race their avatars across about a mile of virtual turf by jogging in place with only a modicum of coordination and zero athletic ability."

jQuery PHP library

http://jquery.hohli.com
"jQuery-PHP is a PHP library that allows to tie jQerry with PHP most natural way. You don't need to think in terms of transmission, parsing and other boring staff. Now you have a bridge that brings DOM right onto your server :) and you can ealisy manipulate it in jQuerry-style way." This seems like one of the worst ideas - maybe it's just me, but "shortcuts" and other encapsulations of client-side JS within server-side code-generation in PHP / Ruby / Python / Perl / etc seems like one of the worst forms of magical obfuscation there is in webdev. Of course, I also feel the same way about most psuedo-ORM SQL / database abstractions.

iconocla.st -- a weblog by Schuyler D. Erle

http://iconocla.st/index.cgi/2006/03/23#skull-on-your-desk
""When you put a thing on your to-do list, you are making a committment to do it," he says to me. "Meaning you aren't going to do some other things." He pauses. "So you have to choose between those things. Now, why do you have to choose?" ... I think about this for a second. "Because your time is limited?" I venture hopefully. ... "BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO FUCKING DIE," he responds. ... At this, the student was enlightened. ... Rich went on to observe that one's to-do list, in whatever form, is ultimately a skull on the desk, a memento mori, a reminder that our time here really is limited and we ought to make the most of it, in as much as the list is also meant to be a tool for helping one actually do so."

Infovore » Playing Together: What Games Can Learn from Social Software

http://infovore.org/talks/playing-together-what-games-can-learn-from-social-software
"MMO servers are currently limited by technological sizes. But what does a server where you know everybody (even a little) look like? What if we limited group sizes for social, not technological reasons? ... We wouldn’t have these servers that resemble sprawling cities; we’d build villages, and hamlets, and travelling camps. And as they grew too big, or small groups within the community grew, they’d break off and move to places where there’s more space for them. In one sense, that’s a more natural metaphor for our users, and it’s a scale that makes sense for them. ... I like this idea that everything, fundamentally, happens at a group level."

How To Launch Software (Aaron Swartz's Raw Thought)

http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/howtolaunch
"Instead what happens when software developers try the Hollywood Launch, and I've seen this many times, is that users indeed do flood to your site on launch day but... Tomorrow, hardly any of those users come back. Your traffic graphs look like the sharpest mountain you've ever seen: a huge climb up and then, almost immediately, a similarly-sized crash back down. ... So what do you do then? Well, you do what you should have done all along: you grow the site."

Mercurial Queues - Mozilla Developer Center

http://developer.mozilla.org/en/Mercurial_Queues
"Mercurial Queues, or MQ, is a Mercurial extension that lets you keep work in progress as mutable patches, instead of as immutable changesets. ... The output of a developer (on a good day, anyway) is patches. The MQ extension lets you treat a stack of patches as works-in-progress. You can apply them as Mercurial changesets, unapply them, edit them, and when they're done, turn them into permanent changesets and push them."

Xmitter : The Royal Oak Drinkup Was Fun

http://xmitter.cc/2008/08/22/the-royal-oak-drinkup-was-fun
"It occurred to me today that I hadn’t yet written anything yet about the DrinkUP meeting that occurred here Wednesday night. Scott Beale, the founder and primary tentacle of Laughing Squid is in town this week and held a small informal get together at the Royal Oak Brewery. Much fun was had and many delicious beers were consumed."

Ma.gnolia Blog: The Open Road Ahead

http://ma.gnolia.com/blog/2008/08/22/the-open-road-ahead
At one point, I thought something like this would've been a good idea for Delicious. But, I never took time to think it through or make a case for it. Could be a horrible idea for all I know. It'll be interesting to see where and how far this goes: "As we develop M2, it means we’ll be posting the code for most pieces in the open and having regular discussions on both technical and non-technical subjects to get input from the community and to share our progress. ... Once M2 is launched, the open source aspects can be downloaded and run as a self-administered installation that can be independent or federated with other installations, including Ma.gnolia.com."

Atari: The Golden Years -- A History, 1978-1981

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3766/atari_the_golden_years__a_.php?print=1
"This four-year period -- from 1977 to 1981 -- contains some of the most exciting developments the company ever saw in its history: the rise of the 2600, the development of some of the company's most enduringly popular games (Centipede, Asteroids) and the development and release of its first home computing platforms."

Obama and McCain Tax Proposals - washingtonpost.com

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/06/09/ST2008060900950.html
"Obama's plan gives the biggest cuts to those who make the least, while McCain would give the largest cuts to the very wealthy. For the approximately 147,000 families that make up the top 0.1 percent of the income scale, the difference between the two plans is stark. While McCain offers a $269,364 tax cut, Obama would raise their taxes, on average, by $701,885 - a difference of nearly $1 million."

Warcraft ElF Tram Sex

http://www.se7en-x.com/yarhump
"Out of sheer boredom and the need to do a little PvP research, I recently found myself exploring the Deeprun Tram on a local roleplaying server. With exploration under way, I trekked deep within the confines of the tram and found something rather unusual. What was this standing before me? Two naked night elves of course."

Recent system:has:shortcut Bookmarks on Delicious

http://delicious.com/tag/system:has:shortcut
"Recent system:has:shortcut Bookmarks" Still one of my favorite hidden Delicious features, partially because I wrote a version of it. Essentially a server-side rendition of Firefox's keyword shortcuts. Bookmark something tagged shortcut:foo, include a %s placeholder in the URL, then search for "!foo bar" and be redirected to the bookmarked URL with %s replaced by "bar". Good for search engine URLs and other command-line-esque URLs. It becomes especially handy if you have Delicious search installed in your search bar. This particular bookmark shows other bookmarks tagged with the shortcut: convention

corner brewery

http://www.cornerbrewery.com
"Our public space is a sunny bar and tasting room with a big outdoor beer garden and a covered deck. Behind the scenes, we are a production brewery producing and bottling Arbor Brewing Company brand beers for distribution throughout the state" Can't believe I hadn't already bookmarked this.

Digital Imaging: Photographs Enhance Video in Absolutely Unbelievable Ways

"Essentially, you shoot some crappy, low-rez video of a still scene. You then reshoot the same scene with a digital camera (with higher resolution). Software can automagically combine these images to upconvert the video AND fix problems in the image— all while compensating for 3D space."

Dare Obasanjo aka Carnage4Life - Explaining REST to Damien Katz

http://www.25hoursaday.com/weblog/2008/08/17/ExplainingRESTToDamienKatz.aspx
"At this point, the benefits of building RESTful services for the Web should be self evident. The Web has a particular architecture and it makes sense that if you are deploying a service or API on the Web then it should take advantage of this architecture instead of fighting against it. There are millions of deployed clients, servers and intermediaries that support REST and it makes sense to be compatible with their expectations. "

The Big Rewrite - ChadFowler.com Rails, Ruby, Software, and Stuff

http://www.chadfowler.com/the-big-rewrite
"But by making it a Big Bang release, you’ve maximized the chances that you’ll be behind schedule when you get to the end ... Imagine going to the hospital for a kidney transplant, and before and during the surgery saying to the surgeon: “Oh, and while you’re already in there digging around, I’ve had some problems with my lungs ... In many cases, these Big Rewrite projects have resulted in unhappy customers, political battles, missed deadlines, and sometimes complete failure to deliver. In all cases, the projects were considerably harder than the projects’ initiators ever thought they would be. ... While we’re all in the back creating the next revision of a product, who’s tending to the day to day issues of the existing product? Typically, it’s the domain experts and the original implementers of the product."

rc3.org — The candidates on evil

http://rc3.org/2008/08/17/the-candidates-on-evil
"Warren asked both candidates the same set of questions — Obama went first but McCain didn’t get to hear Obama’s answers before he had his turn. If I had to pick one question that pretty directly illustrates the differences between these two candidates, it was Warren’s audience-submitted question on evil."

Netcat Tar Pipe

http://compsoc.dur.ac.uk/~djw/tarpipe.html
"So you have gigs of data to transfer between two machines over ethernet. A nice quick and dirty method is to use netcat and tar. This is by no means secure, but if you haven't got the time or desire to setup NFS, FTPd, Samba. Or wait hours for scp to do its job then this can save you a lot of time. "

Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales

http://www.concentratemedia.com/videos/JollyPumpkinBrewing0020.aspx
"Jolly Pumpkin's handcrafted sour beers are loved all across the country. So much so that they take home gold medals for their distinctive oak barrel brews and Beer Advocate magazine ranked them the 8th Best Brewery in America. In fact, they are the only brewery in the U.S. to brew all of their beer in oak barrels. Why? It's all about the taste, man."

"The excerpt from Cicero's original passage began: Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit (Translation: "Neither is there anyone who loves grief itself since it is grief and thus wants to obtain it"). It's petty darned dark for graphic designer's dummy text! In publishing and graphic design, "Lorem ipsum" is common placeholder text used to demonstrate the graphic elements of a document without adding implied meaning of words the reader could understand. Rejecting claims of religious discrimination and stifling of free expression, U.S. District Judge James Otero of Los Angeles said UC's review committees cited legitimate reasons for rejecting the texts - not because they contained religious viewpoints, but because they omitted important topics in science and history and failed to teach critical thinking."

Lin was lip-syncing to the sound of another girl, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, who was heard but not seen, apparently because she was deemed not cute enough. ... "The reason was for the national interest," said Chen Qigang, the ceremony's musical director, in a state radio interview. "The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feeling and expression. ... Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects.""

How Yahoo dropped the del.icio.us ball with a pointless 3 year rewrite (from mod_perl to PHP) : reddit.com

I'm on pretty much the same page as Joshua. I was amazed it launched, which is a credit to the remaining team of heroes. It'll be interesting to see what happens now—given a 2-3 year innovation time-debt, a brand-new bespoke infrastructure, and a load of enqueued we'll-fix-it-laters. Selected joshu quotes: "I think the open question now is whether the remaining team will be able to innovate or be stuck in complicated codebase hell. ... I have significant regret over what ended up happening with Delicious. We could have gone so much farther. ... engineering was focused on the rewrite so nobody had time to replace the old search engine ... They had the technology, but the relevant staff had higher priorities."

The StarCraft Startup Options and the Diablo 2 Options screens will appear, but after pressing Ok, the games close and do not load." Apparently, this is because a recent Leopard update removed 256 color display support from graphics drivers. Later in the thread, it seems that a patch is in the works by the heroic Mac team. Alternatives are Boot Camp or a dicey selective downgrade in graphics drivers from an earlier update.

The Extended Mind

http://consc.net/papers/extended.html
"Where does the mind stop and the rest of the world begin? The question invites two standard replies. Some accept the demarcations of skin and skull, and say that what is outside the body is outside the mind. Others are impressed by arguments suggesting that the meaning of our words "just ain't in the head", and hold that this externalism about meaning carries over into an externalism about mind. We propose to pursue a third position. We advocate a very different sort of externalism: an active externalism, based on the active role of the environment in driving cognitive processes. "

Extended Mind - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Mind
"The Extended Mind refers to an emerging concept within the philosophy of mind that addresses the question as to the division point between the mind and the environment by promoting the view of active externalism. This view proposes that some objects in the external environment are utilized by the mind in such a way that the objects can be seen as extensions of the mind itself. Specifically, the mind is seen to encompass every level of the cognitive process, which will often include the use of environmental aids."

You are all human beings who must make your way through your life by thinking and learning, and you have the job of advancing humanity's knowledge by winnowing out the errors of past generations and finding deeper understanding of reality. You will not find wisdom in rituals and sacraments and dogma, which build only self-satisfied ignorance, but you can find truth by looking at your world with fresh eyes and a questioning mind."
