The quirky genius of the Dos Equis ad campaign. - By Seth Stevenson - Slate Magazine

http://www.slate.com/id/2218849?from=rss
"This Dos Equis campaign features wonderful visual details. The production team clearly took glee in meshing vintage film stocks with unexpected locations and absurd endeavors. My favorite moment is the sight of our tuxedoed hero leading a moonlight expedition through a rocky canyon—flanked by elegant women in evening gowns, a military officer in full dress regalia, and a slightly befuddled fellow wearing a fez. We're left to guess at the precise combination of events that led to this scenario. I like to imagine it's an impromptu escape from a hijacked ocean liner."

Greasemonkey Hacks/Credits - WikiContent

Reads like a Who's Who of my early 2000's RSS reading list. Oh, and I'm in there. "Leslie Michael Orchard is a hacker, tinkerer, and creative technologist who works in the Detroit area. He's engaged to a very patient and understanding science genius girl, and they both live with two spotted Ocicats and two dwarf bunnies. On rare occasions when spare time comes in copious amounts, he plays around with odd bits of code and writing, sharing them on his web site named 0xDECAFBAD"

Big Mess o’ Wires » Wire-Wrap Photos

"I finished wiring the audio circuitry for BMOW yesterday, which marks the end of wiring for BMOW… for version 1 at least! I took the opportunity to reflect on my wire-wrapping odyssey, and took a bazillion photos of the namesake Big Mess o’ Wires before it disappears forever into an opaque case. It’s really quite a sight. There are 1253 wires with 2506 individually-wrapped connections, and I’ve got every one logged in a spreadsheet."

Sliders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sliders
What scifi show hasn't FOX screwed with? "The FOX Network aired the episodes in a different order to best capitalize on potential ratings-winning episodes, thus causing some continuity errors. For instance, the timer is first set to count down not in the pilot episode, but in "Summer of Love" — since FOX aired "Fever" after the pilot episode, though, many viewers were left confused as to why the Sliders suddenly had to leave within a very specific period of time. Similarly, the cliffhanger at the end of "Summer of Love" leads directly into the opening of "Prince of Wails" — which FOX had actually aired a week earlier"

Sony Pictures CEO: The Internet Is Still Bad | Techdirt

http://techdirt.com/articles/20090526/1159125014.shtml
"A week and a half ago, Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton made some news for saying that nothing good had come from the internet, period. Plenty of online sites (including ours) took him to task for that, wondering how one gets to be the CEO of a major content company without understanding the internet. Today, Lynton hit back at critics -- not by saying he was quoted out of context or misunderstood, but by standing behind the statement and adding some gems to it as well. Let's take a look..."

Welcome aboard, Dave! Things that travel together, age together.5. Black holes are not time machines.6. If something happened, it happened.7. There is no meta-time.8. You can’t travel back to before the time machine was built.9. Unless you go to a parallel universe.10. And even then, your old universe is still there."

Whither Eucalyptus? - Jamie’s Web Log

http://www.blog.montgomerie.net/whither-eucalyptus
"If you’re wondering why Eucalyptus is not yet available, it’s currently in the state of being ‘rejected’ for distribution on the iPhone App Store. This is due to the fact that it’s possible, after explicitly searching for them, to find, download from the Internet, and then read texts that Apple deems ‘objectionable’. The example they have given me is a Victorian text-only translation of the Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana. "

Did cooking make us evolve? | Blog | Futurismic

http://futurismic.com/2009/05/19/did-cooking-make-us-evolve
"Harvard anthropologist Richard Wrangman theorizes that cooking with fire triggered hominids to evolve into humans. His experience in the wild led him to conclude that humans could never live on what chimpanzees eat. Cooking, he thinks, might account for the sharp rise in brain size, and the decrease in the size of teeth, that occurred about 1.6 million years ago in Homo erectus over its predecessor, homo habilis. It might explain our relatively small guts and weak jaws, not to mention certain preferences that seem innately human"

Edward Vielmetti - Downtown parking information by telephone project: my part is over

"Sorry I ever brought it up, sorry for any hurt feelings. It was wrong of me to think that I could make any progress without the support of the organization providing the data, and wrong of me to press on regardless of the cost. Someone else will have to care - I give up. It's just not worth it and it's bad for my health to care and to spend too much time around parking structure fumes."

"So if I ask for that page of numbers as the spreadsheet it was originally, and a public records officer for a public body gives it to me as a bitmap, I'm going to ask again and keep asking publicly and perhaps uncomfortably until we both understand that this is a routine request and that compliance with routine requests is much easier than making everything an exception - because maybe, just maybe, I can replace that FOIA letter with a tiny shell script and we can just go about our business."

evserver - Google Code

"EvServer is a lightweight http server, created especially to host python WSGI applications. Django tip: Caching and two-phased template rendering | Holovaty.com

http://www.holovaty.com/writing/django-two-phased-rendering
"It's a clever solution because you end up defining what doesn't get cached instead of what does get cached. It's a sideways way of looking at the problem -- sort of like how Django's template inheritance system defines which parts of the page change instead of defining server-side includes of the common bits."

Raph’s Website » The perfect geek age?

"Looking back on it, it makes me feel a bit sorry for those born ten years later. And I can’t judge ten years earlier, but so much of that seemed to hit at the right age. Looking back at history, it seems like the last big waves of popular invention like this were decades ago. Teens with hot rods? Engineering in the 20s? I see my kids now, and they are so clearly getting the finished products of so much, not the products in the process of invention… Am I wrong?"

Because it’s fucking science. Which isn’t to say that science is infallible, just that I respect that science won’t say that a vaccine is good for you because it “believes” in it."

It takes a special sort of person to eat an entire stick of butter as it should be consumed, on its own, as a singular digestive experience. I see now that you’re not that person."

Xiao Long Bao - Shanghai Steamed Soup Dumplings

"If you’ve never had XLB before, its one of those foods that you absolutely must try in your lifetime. Inside the dumpling are little pockets of gelatinized broth made from chicken, pork and cured ham. When you steam the dumpling, the broth gelatin melts. If you would like to be seduced, read on. If you aren’t in a spot where you can comfortably moan out loud (like at work, or at school, or if your kids are running around), I suggest that you close this site, come back another time with a glass of wine - you really can’t skip the foreplay. My father worked his entire life for the federal government. My brother, who has cerebral palsy, lives on Social Security. The script in question runs on the map “The Hunters”, although it could easily be exported to other maps. There are two Protoss players, two Zerg players, and three Terran Players. The 3 Cheers note is worth 3 dollars; and change will be issued in us currency for purchases made with cheers when the cost of the item is less. The second are those who issue the currency and are identified on the tail side of the bill. The commitment of those who issue is that they will always keep in cash reserve the amount of their issue. "IMAP is an email protocol for organizing, storing and retrieving emails on a remote server. It was developed after POP and is a much more advanced system, one of the main differences being that all the mail is stored on the server so it remains accessible from many different locations. With POP you have to download the mail to your local computer in order to read it and therefore you cannot synchronize your mail across many different machines. It may be more complex than POP but there are still only a few core commands we need to know in order to access our mail on an IMAP server."
