PRAW: The Python Reddit Api Wrapper — PRAW 2.1.4 documentation

https://praw.readthedocs.org/en/latest/
PRAW, an acronym for “Python Reddit API Wrapper”, is a python package that allows for simple access to reddit’s API. PRAW aims to be as easy to use as possible and is designed to follow all of reddit’s API rules. You have to give a useragent that follows the rules, everything else is handled by PRAW so you needn’t worry about violating them.

A standing desk for $22

http://iamnotaprogrammer.com/Ikea-Standing-desk-for-22-dollars.html
I’ve been interested in standing desks for a while. I keep reading things like: he who sits the most dies the soonest. All the options online are expensive. Until now. Ryan of Opani, our deskmate who does amazing big data analytics and I combined our brains to see if we could come up with a better solution:

After my 4th time coming back to eve (since 2009) this time I actually look forward to playing it. : Eve

http://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/comments/1gbypm/after_my_4th_time_coming_back_to_eve_since_2009/
After creating my character in 2009 and getting into mining I found eve dull and boring so I quit playing then picking it back up again then I'd get bored again...2 months ago I decided I'd get back into it once again but this time I would leave mining behind (except to make isk because my skills are fairly decent) I decided to pick up pvp...I found a nice, small corp in Pizza who are extremely helpful and friendly and now I'm hooked! I can't believe I kept coming back to mining instead of trying something...well, fun! For all the new players here, dont lose interest after a couple of months, if you find the game boring try a different career path, I guarantee there will be something you enjoy about the game! submitted by Anonymoose9311 to Eve[link] [19 comments]

Does anyone else share my strange space hobby because I don't want to feel alone : Eve

http://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/comments/1gfcix/does_anyone_else_share_my_strange_space_hobby/
Hi friends I regularly put the minimum bounty amount (100k) on random people that I find in all parts of space. When they die I get a notification of them dying, and then I can go on eve-kill or whatever and see what they died in and who killed them and where. I see my duties similar to those of a wild life ranger - tagging animals in the wild to monitor their movements and social behaviors. I plan to keep my findings neatly organized in an excel document to be published in Nature. Anyone else do this because it's pretty neat submitted by Ohh_Yeah to Eve[link] [17 comments]

Stop Doing Internet Wrong. - Scott Hanselman

http://www.hanselman.com/blog/StopDoingInternetWrong.aspx
Some days...some days it's frustrating to be on the web. We're compiling C++ into JavaScript and running Unreal in the browser but at the same time, here in 2013, we're still making the same mistakes. And by we, I mean, the set of web developers who aren't us, right Dear Reader? Because surely you're not doing any of these things. ;)

Ladda

http://lab.hakim.se/ladda/
A UI concept which merges loading indicators into the action that invoked them. Primarily intended for use with forms where it gives users immediate feedback upon submit rather than leaving them wondering while the browser does its thing. For a real-world example, check out any of the forms on slid.es.

Persona and Surveillance - Identity at Mozilla

http://identity.mozilla.com/post/52729477874/persona-and-surveillance
It’s also worth pointing out that we do take certain technical measures to limit the data we collect. We’ve designed Persona so that the identity provider – including the fallback Identity Provider that we run – does not learn your browsing history. We consider that a good security practice, not specifically because of surveillance, but generally because collecting data without a user benefit just creates risk.

Appeals Court Makes Monsanto Promise Not To Sue Organic Farmers | ThinkProgress

http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/06/11/2133121/appeals-court-monsanto-not-sue-farmers/
On Monday, a federal appeals court dismissed organic farmers’ lawsuit against the biotech firm Monsanto Company — but extracted a binding promise from Monsanto that they would not sue farmers whose crops were inadvertently contaminated with their product. Monsanto, which owns the patents to the vast majority of genetically modified staple crops in the U.S., devotes $10 million a year and a staff of 75 specifically to investigate and sue farmers who use their GM technology without paying royalties. To date, they have pursued more than 800 patent infringement cases.

Sparkle Donkey Tequila

http://www.sparkledonkey.com/
The story of the Sparkle Donkey — or El Burro Esparkalo as he is better known — began as little more than a local anecdote about a humble-yet-noble creature that, in dire times, delivered liquid salvation to many who were in need. But as time passed and word of his strange, lustrous aura and invigorating, ambrosial drink spread, the Sparkle Donkey became a powerful symbol of hope — an iconic and inscrutable totem that resonates to this very day.

The snake whose bite can send you back through puberty

http://io9.com/5878200/the-snake-whose-bite-can-send-you-back-through-puberty
In a study published in The Lancet, about twenty-nine percent of patients who recovered from Russell's Viper venom had signs of hypopituitarism or Sheehan's Syndrome. Both conditions have unremarkable symptoms, like a constant feeling of cold and an unusual amount of fatigue. What distinguishes them is a sort of reverse-puberty in adults. They lose their sex drive. They lose fertility. They lose their body hair, especially pubic hair. Men lose facial hair and muscles. Women lose curves as the condition causes them to lose weight. Some doctors even report loss of mental faculties as the condition progresses.

Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, WA, tries new approach to school discipline — suspensions drop 85% « ACEs Too High

http://acestoohigh.com/2012/04/23/lincoln-high-school-in-walla-walla-wa-tries-new-approach-to-school-discipline-expulsions-drop-85/
A student blows up at a teacher, drops the F-bomb. The usual approach at Lincoln – and, safe to say, at most high schools in this country – is automatic suspension. Instead, Sporleder sits the kid down and says quietly: “Wow. Are you OK? This doesn’t sound like you. What’s going on?” He gets even more specific: “You really looked stressed. On a scale of 1-10, where are you with your anger?”

New Study Confirms Obamacare's Birth Control Mandate Will Reduce Abortion Rate | ThinkProgress

http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/10/05/966121/obamacare-birth-control-abortion/
A new study focusing on low-income women in St. Louis, MO concludes that expanding access to free contraception — just as the health care reform law does through its provision to provide birth control without a co-pay — leads to significantly lower rates of unintended teen pregnancy and abortion. Researchers found that when women weren’t prohibited by cost, they chose more effective, long-lasting forms of birth control and experienced many fewer unintended pregnancies as a result.

Mad Men recap: Solving the mystery of Bob Benson. - Slate Magazine

http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/tv_club/features/2013/mad_men_season_6/week_9/mad_men_recap_solving_the_mystery_of_bob_benson.html
My bet is that the joke is on us, that there is no great reveal. Bob Benson is a way for the writers to show us how, in the world of Mad Men, the very qualities that define a real go-getting American businessman, here, in this office, with these people, look like vile perversion. To propose that Bob Benson is a spy is, frankly, to dance on Dutch Reagan’s grave. If you suspect Bob, you suspect the backbone of American commerce. If you suspect Bob, you suspect opportunity itself.

The Secret Apartment in the Mall

http://www.trummerkind.com/mall/What_Happened.html
Starting in 2003 I committed to the idea of creating a luxury apartment in the mall. Over the course of the years to come I systematically coordinated the movement of the core elements that start to define a home. The space in the mall achieved a base-level of comfort, with enough amenities to qualify itself as a livable domestic space. Life from within the mall was committed to the pursuit of normalcy and the purchase of objects and clothing that would help define me an active participant in the great things the mall has to offer. The apartment was a superb space for hosting guests and I only regret that we didn’t have a working toilet. I will do my best to share thoughts about its creation and the aftermath with regular writing here.

Monopoly auction rule: Official? Yes. Smart? No.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2013/06/03/monopoly_auction_rule_official_yes_smart_no.html
An old blog post about an “unknown” Monopoly rule has been making its way around the Web the past few days, starting with a piece on BuzzFeed, then spreading to MSN, Yahoo, HuffPo, and a slew of other places. The gist is simple: When landing on a property, you’re allowed to auction it off, with the highest bidder paying the bank, rather than just purchasing it yourself.

Hexagonal Grids

http://www.redblobgames.com/grids/hexagons/
Hexagonal grids are used in some games but aren’t quite as straightforward or common as square grids. I’ve been collecting hex grid resources for nearly 20 years, and wrote this guide to the most elegant approaches that lead to the simplest code, largely based on the guides by Charles Fu and Clark Verbrugge. I’ll describe the various ways to make hex grids (I’ve counted 74 so far!), the relationships between them, as well as some common algorithms. Many parts of this page are interactive; choosing a type of grid will update diagrams, code, and text to match.
