Funko Isn’t Lying About These SAGA Funko Pop Figures | Nerdist

https://nerdist.com/funko-pop-saga-image-comics-lying-cat/
Aside from The Walking Dead, one of the biggest hits to ever come out of Image Comics is Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples‘ fan favorite series Saga. First published by Skybound Entertainment back in 2012, and still going strong today, Saga is the epic sci-fi/fantasy story of Alana and Marko, two lovers from long-warring alien races, as they flee authorities from both sides of a massive galactic war. Traveling with their newborn daughter, Hazel, the pair encounter astonishing aliens, fearsome bounty hunters and a host of allies and enemies alike as they try and keep their new family safe. Now the characters from Saga are the latest comic book icons to join the Funko family. Starting in February 2018, Saga fans will be be able to pick up Pop! vinyl figures of characters such as Lying Cat, Alana, Marko, Prince Robot IV, and The Will. Fans will be able to purchase a bloody version of The Will as a chase variant, a rarity of 1-in-6. Also, Izabel the ghostly babysitter will be available as a Hot Topic exclusive, and Lying Cat will have two different variants — a bloody version, available at your local comic book shop and a pink version, available only at Barnes & Noble stores. Saga is one of the wildest and most inventive comic book series of the 21st century, proving that Runaways and Y: The Last Man’s Brian K. Vaughan was anything but two-hit wonder. With the series quickly approaching its 50th issue, Saga fans will want to celebrate their love for all things Alana and Marko with these adorable Pop! figures. You can check out the entire Saga wave one below in our gallery. Are you as stoked as we are to see the characters of Saga get their own adorable Pop! figures? Be sure to let us know in the comments. Wolfenstein 2 isn't getting multiplayer | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

With us living in the age of ‘games as service’, there’s been a bit of hand-wringing about the death of single-player games. Of course, there are still plenty of single-player games in development, and in the case of Machine Games’ Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, the studio say they’ve made a concerted effort to not let anything detract from that solo experience. A 976 Number to talk to Kitt from Knight Rider! - The Retroist

As a kid I was a sucker for a good 976 number. I called the Chipmunks, Howard the Duck, Santa and many more. All of this without my Mom’s permission. Which caused some issues. A curiously incomplete history of the early years of DRM / Boing Boing

Ernie Smith's Motherboard article on the early years of DRM gets into some fascinating stories about things like IBM's Cryptolope and Xerox PARC's Contentguard (which became a patent troll), Intertrust's belief that it is "developing the basis for a civil society in cyberspace" and the DeCSS fight. Netflix's 'Voltron' Brings Heart to Giant Fighting Robots | Inverse

https://www.inverse.com/article/37528-voltron-legendary-defender-netflix-season-4-review
There’s one episode of Voltron Legendary Defender on Netflix that sums up the series as a transcendent piece of science-fiction: In Season 2, the heroes of Voltron need a crucial “Teludav” — a device that creates wormholes — to stand a chance against King Zarkon of the Galra Empire. Princess Allura’s advisor Coran knows the only place to get it: a dangerous trading outpost, home to a wretched hive of scum in a corner of the galaxy where baddies do business. Dressed in apocalyptic disguises to assimilate among the shady pirates, the heroes arrive at the outpost… and it’s a mall. As in, a space mall, with a food court and bored teenaged employees. You wouldn’t think a marketplace on a distant intergalactic planet would look like New Jersey. And it’s inside this surprisingly suburban space mall where the Paladins of Voltron, who survive danger and emerge victorious almost every episode, escape the clutches of a rent-a-cop, Varkon, a schlub who fancies himself as King Zarkon’s “Number Two.” Read More... https://www.inverse.com/article/37544-every-episode-of-rick-and-morty-is-the-same-and-we-like-it-that-way
For a show that has multiple dimensions and purge planets, Rick and Morty seems like the last show to follow a structure. Co-Creator Dan Harmon, however, has been a staunch Joseph Campbell fan since his 20’s, and that strict adherence to structure has help make Rick and Morty the show it is today. Read More... The Trouble With Twitter – jeffmueller.net

https://jeffmueller.net/2017/10/18/the-trouble-with-twitter/
We need an alternative to Twitter. I don’t know what that looks like, but I have a feeling it’ll involve tight control of micro-communities where users have the ability to ban people for bad behavior. Whatever it is, I hope it surfaces soon and gets enough traction to pull my friends (and some third-party app developers) away from Twitter for good.

Web Audio Modem

https://martinmelhus.com/web-audio-modem/
Lately, I've been working with a client where my development computer is not connected to the Internet. This is a huge inconvenience, as the unavailability of Google and Stack Overflow vastly impact my productivity. Only recently have I begun to grasp how much of my time is actually spent copy/pasting between Visual Studio and the browser. My office also features an Internet connected laptop and my development computer expose 3,5 mm jack sockets for audio devices. And thus my problems can be solved! Here's how I made a modem for closing the gap with Web Audio.

If you are beyond a certain age, you will recall when getting on the Internet was preceded by strange buzzing and squawking noises. Modems used tones to transmit and receive data across ordinary telephone lines. There were lots of tricks used to keep edging the speed of modem up until — at the end — you could download (but not upload) at a blazing 56,000 bits per second. [Martin Kirkholt Melhus] decided to recreate a modem. In a Web browser. No kidding.

Once up on a time, before my writing brain had been *entirely* swallowed up by Twitter. One of the most productive daily public writing tools I used was the OPML Editor and a daily outline always open on my desktop ready to receive thoughts. Kind of like Twitter, I guess, except it was a *thing* that I added to over the course of the day. I could edit it, publish it whenever, not publish it until I had my words straight. This is one of the best short things I wrote with it - meditations on my Dad after his passing.

The movement of David Fincher’s camera is a surrogate for your eyes

https://kottke.org/17/10/the-movement-of-david-finchers-camera-is-a-surrogate-for-your-eyes
This is a really keen observation by Evan Puschak about the camera movement in David Fincher’s films: it mimics your eyes in paying attention to the behavior in a scene. The effect is sometimes subtle. When a character shifts even slightly, the camera keeps that person’s eyes and face in the same place in the frame, just as you would if you were in the room with them. Hey look! Facebook banned another of my friends! It must be a day ending in "y". Of course, Limor has no idea why this happened. Because commenting on specific accounts, even to the owners of those accounts, is "against policy". If you work for Facebook, quit: There are more Russian bots or whatever they are on Facebook than USA female EEs & CEOs from MIT on Facebook that have USA manufacturing companies in the USA, way to set the world on fire Mark. Zuckerberg, 2010: Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard Zuck: Just ask Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS [Bro McBro]: What? How'd you manage that one? Zuck: People just submitted it. Zuck: I don't know why. Zuck: They "trust me" Zuck: Dumb fucks It of course goes without saying that, having banned someone with connections and influence, there may shortly be a fauxpology saying that "upon review", whatever triggered this ban did not actually violate their terms of service. (Implied: "this time"). Maybe they will even, in passive voice, throw an anonymous sweatshop contractor under the bus and abstractly "regret" any "inconvenience". People without such influence don't get even that level of royal treatment. This is your irregularly-scheduled reminder: If you work for Facebook, quit. It is morally indefensible for you to use your skills to make that company more powerful. By working there, you are making the world an objectively worse place. I'm sure you can find a job working for a company that you don't have to apologize for all the time. You can do it. I believe in you. Scandroid Cover of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" : outrun

https://www.reddit.com/r/outrun/comments/75xid1/scandroid_cover_of_michael_jacksons_thriller/
Scandroid, the synthwave project of Detroit producer Klayton, is quickly becoming a go-to resource for synth-driven and seasonally appropriate covers: His rendition of Star Wars‘ “The Force Theme” was perfect for May The Fourth, and now he’s getting ready for Halloween with an electric cover of Michael Jackson’s spooky classic “Thriller.” The track premieres today exclusively on Nerdist, and while Jackson’s original doesn’t need any improving, the bombastic synths and punchy percussion make it feel like you’re driving through the set of Miami Vice at 200 miles per hour. The song comes from Scandroid’s upcoming album Monochrome, which also includes the aforementioned Star Wars cover and a bonus remix of “Thriller” by synthwave producer PYLOT. Klayton says that once he decided to put a Halloween-themed track on the album, he knew instantly that “Thriller” was the one: “I knew when I started the album (Monochrome) that I wanted to do a Halloween-related track. It only took me 1/4 of a second to conclude this would be my perfect chance to cover a track I loved during the 80s. I probably watched the ‘Thriller’ music video 100+ times on my parents VCR after I recorded it from MTV.” Monochrome comes out on October 27 and is available for pre-order now. Watch the video for “Thriller” above, listen to the track on Spotify, and check out the album tracklist below.   1. “2518” 2. “Afterglow” 3. “Rendezvous” 4. “Thriller” 5. “Oblivia” 6. “Monochrome” 7. “The Force Theme” 8. “Future Bloodline” 9. “A Thousand Years” 10. “On The Face of The Deep” 11. “The Veil” 12. “Searching For a Lost Horizon” 13. “Thriller (PYLOT Remix)” Featured image: Scandroid submitted by /u/jimmy_rhodes to r/outrun[link] [comments]

A Church of the SubGenius documentary is in the works / Boing Boing

https://boingboing.net/2017/10/12/a-church-of-the-subgenius-docu.html
Folks, there's going to be a documentary about that crazy cult/religion known as the Church of the SubGenius. But only if you send J.R. "Bob" Dobbs boat loads of cash! Now more than ever we feel that the story of the Church of the SubGenius needs to be told. There's a core of ideas within the SubGenius ethos – of fighting oppression with humor, community and creativity, of using absurdity as a nonviolent weapon, giving time, permission and priority to expression, creation, and zaniness with friends – that we think has great value we believe these ideas are necessary in today's world and that our film about the SubGenius is the perfect way to invoke them. Amongst all the spaceships, frop, pipes, eye-bludgeoning graphics, bulldada, yeti ancestors, (and yes, ‘macho spoutings’), we hope you will fund this film so you can join our merry band of pranksters on the culture-jam of the century! It’s going to be a lot of fun!!! Previously: Crowdfunding a Church of the Subgenius alien contact beam (RED)
