The most surprising insight, I think, revolves around the significance of the fundamental substrate of all modern notebooks until the digital age: paper. Before reading Allen's book, I had mostly thought about paper in terms of Gutenberg and the printing press democratizing knowledge and information by making it much easier to publish and read printed information in the form of books. But somehow I hadn't fully thought through the more intimate revolution that it enabled—a revolution of self-knowledge and private record-keeping, executed not with a printing press but with a pen.

"The quest for the perfect pen"

"I saw in the corner of my eye my faithful notebook, which now lay on the ground. Once unmarred, I saw now the small mark which I had made with the devil's own pen"

"Innovative pigmented liquid-ink technology for exceptionally smooth writing" Always have one of these in my pocket along with a Moleskine

"Smooth writing gel ink that's water resistant, check-safe and smear-proof" Never quite got into using these.

"They have a plethora of writing utensils, cards, stationary, and Sanrio-like gifts. I adore their notebook section. It's definitely worth a look through if you're into that cutesy stuff."

Pretty expensive, but an excellent idea: "a small, sterling silver pen that tucks into the fold of your wallet."

"Japanese pens are the best in the world, made of extremely high quality, with well made, extremely fine parts." Tempting, tempting

This has been my old standby pen for as long as I can remember.

$6,500.00 - But, wow.

I like extra fine tip pens.
