Open Fuel Standard: Why Support the Open Fuel Standard Act of 2011?
Oil prices will stay high unless market forces drive them down through competition with alternative liquid fuels. Conservatives as well as liberals should be supporting the Open Fuel Standard that will ensure that drivers have fuel choice and thus that market forces can work. As long as the only useful fuel is petroleum the "market" simply can't work. For a market to work, you need alternatives and the opportunity for consumers to make choices. The government need to subsidize alternative fuels, all that is necessary to clear the existing market failure is to mandate that new cars must be built with fuel lines that will permit alternative fuels to be used. (cost: about $100/car). We were able to mandate seat belts to save lives. It is time we mandated the Open Fuel Standard to save our economy and our markets.
