Fun with uv and PEP 723

For the longest time, I have been frustrated with Python because I couldn’t use it for one-off scripts. I had to first ensure it was running in an environment where it could find the right Python version and the dependencies installed. That is now a thing of the past.

Tags: #dev #python #scripting #tools #uv

BRA and KET: String Interpolation in AmigaDOS | datagubbe.se

By default, the parser does string interpolation using the characters < (less than) and > (greater than). The cleverness of this is debatable: these characters are also used for I/O redirection, which can quickly make things confusing. Luckily, the parser also accepts the directives .BRA and .KET, each followed by a single character, which lets the programmer override the default interpolation characters. The terms BRA and KET are most likely borrowed from Dirac notation.

Tags: #amiga #commodore #retro #scripting

Platypus | Sveinbjorn Thordarson

Platypus is a developer tool for the Mac OS X operating system. It can be used to create native, flawlessly integrated Mac OS X applications from interpreted scripts such as shell scripts or Perl and Python programs. This is done by wrapping the script in an application bundle directory structure along with an executable binary that runs the script.

Tags: #apps #mac #osx #scripting

The Phrasebook Pattern

Not unlike templates for (X)HTML? "The Phrasebook pattern is a technique to separate expressions in one language (e.g., SQL) from the main code that is written in another programming language (e.g., Perl). This is done by keeping the expressions in a separate file – the phrasebook. Any specific expression is generated by finding the appropriate entry in the phrasebook and substituting application parameters into it. This separation makes maintenance easier both for the main application code and for the foreign language code."

Tags: #perl #phrasebook #scripting #sql #webdev

Dynamic programming futures | InfoWorld | Test Center | October 13, 2008 | By Peter Wayner, IDG News Service

"What will the world of dynamic programming languages and Web applications look like in five years? This is one of those highly personal and deeply philosophical questions best saved for after dessert is served, the drinks are poured, and the sidearms are safely locked away."

Tags: #javascript #perl #programming #python #ruby #scripting #webdev
