Doctor When

DOCTOR WHO is gone. STAR TREK has reached the end of its cycle. The STARGATE reboot was cancelled. The new STAR WARS film did not do well, and I believe they only have one more film in the pipeline. The MCU is not in a great place and the shape of its future will balance on the two new AVENGERS films. SUPERMAN’s takings were soft and SUPERGIRL is tracking at less than half of SUPERMAN’s opening.

And the two biggest films of the last month were made for less than a million each by directors in their twenties.

One or two swallows don’t make a summer, but right now it looks like old science fiction inflected IP is reaching a hiatus point.

Tags: #doctorwho #media #scifi #startrek #tv

Guillermo del Toro reimagines 'Frankenstein' : NPR

It has a very Byronian, very doomed, very Wuthering Heights sort of look of a doomed hero. And when he's first born, and is bald and almost naked, I wanted it to feel like an anatomical chart, like something newly minted. ... The head is patterned after phrenology manuals from the 1800s. So they have very elegant, almost aerodynamic lines. I wanted this alabaster or marble, statue feel, so it feels like a newly minted human being. And we also tried to make it the way I remember the Jesus images, life size, in the churches of my childhood.

Tags: #deltoro #frankenstein #horror #movies #scifi

The Last Backup - 365tomorrows

The notification appeared at 3:47 AM: FINAL CONSCIOUSNESS BACKUP COMPLETE.

Amara stared at her phone, hands trembling. Tomorrow—today, technically—she will undergo the procedure. Her biological brain, riddled with an inoperable tumor, would be replaced with a neural substrate. The doctors promised it would be seamless. She’d wake up still being Amara, just in a different medium.

But which Amara?

Tags: #fiction #scifi

They Let Me Live

"The friend-guild shows up for all kinds of people in need. We're visiting nurses. We're aid advocates. We're often first responders. My grandma lost her legs to a mine in the Horrors, and there wasn't enough medicine to keep it from getting a lot worse. I volunteered when I was sixteen so I could be the one appointed to feed her and bathe her, because she found it more dignified when it was family. She spent her last years in pain, but the guy who laid the mine? Who knows if they'll ever think about it? What would it change, if they did? The mine was laid. We can disarm the mines, we can demolish the munitions factories, we can even abolish war itself, but there was no restoring her. We have to live with the damage. We have to live in reality."

Tags: #fiction #future #portland #scifi #stories

Odysseus was a groundbreaking larp production that was originally run in 2019 and again as remastered version in 2024.

Massive team of volunteers transformed an elementary school into a living, breathing space ship and took over 600 players from 30 different countries to an unforgettable journey through the stars.

Tags: #larp #odysseus #rpg #scifi

The Collective Ambition Behind Odysseus, a Game-changing Sci-fi Larp – mssv

Last year, hundreds of players inhabited a spaceship on the run, scrambling to keep one step ahead of the enemy. The sci-fi larp Odysseus was inspired by Battlestar Galactica’s “33“, but where that episode only lasted 45 minutes, Odysseus’ players worked, fought, ate, and slept in-game for fifty non-stop hours.

Tags: #larp #odysseus #rpg #scifi

Ursula K. Le Guin — Ursula on Writing: A Rant about "Techonolgy"

Technology is the active human interface with the material world. ... We have been so desensitized by a hundred and fifty years of ceaselessly expanding technical prowess that we think nothing less complex and showy than a computer or a jet bomber deserves to be called “technology” at all. As if linen were the same thing as flax — as if paper, ink, wheels, knives, clocks, chairs, aspirin pills, were natural objects, born with us like our teeth and fingers — as if steel saucepans with copper bottoms and fleece vests spun from recycled glass grew on trees, and we just picked them when they were ripe...

Tags: #leguin #scifi #technology #writing

It began centuries ago. Due to our physiology and the fact that our world contains a single continent, we never gave priority to developing long range communications. Our mind was one and we knew what all saw and felt. But as we developed and the laws of nature made themselves known to us, we stumbled unto radio signals.

Tags: #aliens #flashfiction #scifi
