My last word on DRM | Studio Tendra

It involves inflicting a recurring technical, infrastructural, and administrative cost on all of their sales in perpetuity to solve a problem they can’t prove exists. By tying their entire catalogue, in perpetuity, to the fate and competence of a single external service provider (whoever provides the DRM solution) publishers are taking a business risk of unfathomable proportions. These are the kinds of risks that sink large companies.

Tags: #books #drm #imported:pinboard #publishers #reading

Broken by Design: MongoDB Fault Tolerance :: Hacking, Distributed

Look, I realize that we live in a TL;DR culture. I lived through 8 years of a non-reading president along with everyone else. I know that the brogrammers out there are constantly getting texts from their buddies to plan the weekend's broactivities, trying to decide in whose mancave they'll be setting up their lan party, and are thoroughly distracted in between futzing with their smart phones and writing a few lines of code per day by cutting and pasting it from stackoverflow. But it's really not ok to act functionally illiterate when you're not actually illiterate, when an advanced society that once put a man on the moon worked so hard to educate you.

Tags: #amen #brogrammers #imported:pinboard #literacy #mongodb #nosql #reading #writing

Technology - Alexis Madrigal - The Next Time Someone Says the Internet Killed Reading Books, Show Them This Chart - The Atlantic

All this to say: our collective memory of past is astoundingly inaccurate. Not only has the number of people reading not declined precipitously, it's actually gone up since the perceived golden age of American letters.

Tags: #books #imported:pinboard #internet #reading #to:fb
