JavaScript Stardate Converter

These conversion routines convert to and from Star Trek: The Next Generation style Stardates. These stardates take the form YYXXX.XX where the first two digits refer to the year with 2323 being year zero and the remaining digits being the decimal portion of the year. The last digit before the decimal point is one stardate and is approximately eight and three quarters hours in length.

Tags: #imported:pinboard #javascript #nerd #stardate #startrek

World Wide Words: Nerd

Cartoonists, illustrators and other artists have used nerds to mean eraser crumbs for more than sixty years. When I worked at newspapers in the sixties, we had a special brush for getting rid of nerds before inking a drawing because the tiny pieces of rubber would cause blots and blobs on the art.

Tags: #funny #imported:pinboard #nerd #to:fb #words

I have an unwritten blog post in my head about this, re: religion & faith vs science & doubt. If you have faith in a bunch of answers, the universe is boring. If you have doubt about many things, you have room for adventure.

Tags: #kids #nerd #science

Pushing Daisies: Six Ways Pushing Daisies Made Your Inner Nerd Cry Tears of Geeky Joy

"Nerds are renowned the world over for our extensive knowledge of possibly useless trivia, our obsessive devotion to our favorite books and films, and our resulting difficulties communicating with non-nerds. Thanks to modern internet culture, however, these days everyone is a nerd. And nowhere is that more evident than in these great moments from troubled urban fantasy show Pushing Daisies — where our hero is a Jedi wannabee slash zombie rights activist, and our Japanese-speaking heroine reads everything in sight."

Tags: #nerd #pushingdaisies #television #tv #youmustwatchthisshow
