MozLove Box by eeejay - Thingiverse

A nifty box inspired by Sean Martell's mozlove avatar. It uses a pair of magnets to snap shut. You could choose either the embossed mozilla for the top, or print the letters in another color and glue them to the top using the peg holes as guides.

Tags: #3dprinting #mozilla

Newsonaut: Turning inner space into outer space

Firefox is our last best hope for browser engine diversity and competition. Without it we would be stuck with Google Chrome and its spinoffs everywhere (including Vivaldi). The only holdout would be Apple Safari, hanging in there only because it’s the enforced default on iPhones.

Tags: #browsers #firefox #mozilla

Firefox's AI kill switch exists. Only 1% of users have flipped it.

Mozilla built an AI kill switch into Firefox after its users demanded one. Only 1% have used it. Another 3% turned off some AI features selectively. The rest left everything on. CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo says the point is not the percentage but the choice.

Tags: #ai #firefox #llms #mozilla #web

Saying goodbye to asm.js | SpiderMonkey JavaScript/WebAssembly Engine

asm.js was Mozilla’s response to the question posed by NaCl and PNaCl: how can the web run code at native speeds?

The idea was clever: pick a strict, statically-typed subset of JavaScript that an engine could recognize on the fly and compile down to native code. We could get performance similar to NaCl/PNaCl and still have code live inside web content and use web API’s (no separate sandbox, IPC, or alternative API’s).

asm.js shipped in Firefox 22 back in 2013 and was a success. It let projects like Unity and Unreal ship C/C++ codebases to the web for the first time, using just standard web technologies. The Epic Citadel demo was ported to the web in just four days. It was a landmark achievement, and a fond memory for the original asm.js team.

Tags: #asmjs #firefox #javascript #mozilla #wasm

Under the hood of MDN's new frontend

Last year, we launched a new frontend for MDN. The most noticeable changes were adjustments to our styles; we simplified and unified the MDN design across all of our pages. In truth, the biggest changes were not reader-visible, but rather in the overhauled code that powers our frontend. This post describes what we've done, the technologies we chose, and why we did it at all.

Tags: #mdn #mozilla #webcomponents #webdev

Project Code Rush - The Beginnings of Netscape / Mozilla Documentary - YouTube

Code Rush is a documentary following the lives of a group of Netscape engineers in Silicon Valley. It covers Netscape's last year as an independent company, from their announcement of the Mozilla open source project until their acquisition by AOL. It particularly focuses on the last minute rush to make the Mozilla source code ready for release by the deadline of March 31 1998, and the impact on the engineers' lives and families as they attempt to save the company from ruin.

Tags: #documentaries #mozilla #netscape

A first interview with Mozilla’s new CEO on AI, Firefox, and the web | The Verge

It’s no accident that the Firefox guy is taking over, by the way. “Priority one [for Mozilla] is still building the best browser,” he says. “I am very pragmatic that that is our core business, and it would take a lot to prove otherwise.” Going forward, when Mozilla launches new products, they’re likely to be tied to Firefox — Enzor-DeMeo mentions that Mozilla VPN is coming to Firefox next year, just to name one, and says there are other features in the works.

Tags: #business #ceo #firefox #mozilla

Two Years of Building AI in Firefox | Tarek Ziadé

When I started working on AI at Mozilla two years ago, I was a Python developer with a background in web services and three months of machine learning experience from working on the Nuclia DB project. I was not someone who had trained models from scratch or built production ML infrastructure. Today, Firefox ships multiple AI features that run entirely on-device, and I helped build the infrastructure that makes that possible. This is a retrospective on what we accomplished and what I learned along the way.

Tags: #ai #llms #mozilla

Servo 0.0.2 hints at a real Rust alternative to Chromium • The Register

In summary, there are a handful of non-Chromium based alternative browsers out there, but not many and they do have some limitations. In the world of web components to embed into apps, there's really no choice except Chromium. That is why Servo matters. It's FOSS, it's independent, and it's more or less the original Rust project.

Tags: #mozilla #servo #web #webdev

Rewiring Mozilla: Doing for AI what we did for the web

Mozilla has always been focused on making the internet a better place. Which is why pushing AI in a different direction than it’s currently headed is the core focus of our strategy right now. As AI becomes a fundamental component of everything digital — everything people build on the internet — it’s imperative that we step in to shape where it goes.

Tags: #ai #mozilla #web #webdev

I know you don’t want them to want AI, but… - Anil Dash

Another reality that people were a little more quiet in acknowledging, and sometimes reluctant to engage with out loud, is the reality that hundreds of millions of people are using the major AI tools every day. When I would point this out, there was often an initial defensive reaction talking about how people are forced to use these tools at work, or how AI is being shoehorned into every tool and foisted upon users. This is all true! And also? Hundreds of millions of users are choosing to go to these websites, of their own volition, and engage with these tools.

Tags: #ai #firefox #llms #mozilla #users #web

Playing with AI inference in Firefox Web extensions

Concluding, I think this is a very interesting way of working with AI inference in the browser. The obvious downside is that you need to convince your users to download an extension, but the obvious upside is that you possibly can save them from having to download a model they may already have downloaded and stored on their disk.

Tags: #ai #firefox #llm #ml #mozilla
