We are going to kill “unalive” - Anil Dash

If you are a 20th century relic like me, it is incumbent upon you to remind the generation that grew up inside the algorithm that another world is possible, and that we know this because we lived it. We were able to style a MySpace page in any way that we wanted; the code for LiveJournal was entirely open source so there was no part of the algorithm that was unknowable. A blog like the one you’re reading right now could be made by anyone, and put up for pennies, and nobody could stop it from being read by millions of people. (And that last one? It’s still possible.)

Tags: #language #metablogging #social #speech

In short, the parts of my old archived posts that survived 14 years were the ones I owned and kept simple; the parts that broke were the ones I outsourced to someone else's server.

Tags: #metablogging #webdev

If you can’t be bothered writing it, I can’t be bothered reading it. — Crooked Timber

I totally get the pressure to produce. Academics have been long turned into content churners. ‘Publish or perish’ in some regions and institutions meant how much could you produce in how little a time. As a postgraduate student I attended a workshop where a senior professor describes turning the same conference paper into five publications FIVE!? Who do they think was going to read all this samey shit?

Tags: #blogging #metablogging #writing

Clicks have killed the Inverted Pyramid

Writing students once learned that putting the most important information first in an article was the preferred, humane way of reporting on a situation. This allowed readers to quickly decide if a story interested them without having to read further.

Tags: #blogging #journalism #metablogging #web #writing

Hate “The Algorithm?” RSS Is One of the Tools You’ve Been Looking For | Electronic Frontier Foundation

RSS is one of the best examples we have of the open web, where we can design and customize how we experience the internet, not the other way around. RSS has come in and out of fashion, been declared dead, and has come back, every time. Open systems are the best way forward to a free, equitable internet, and the resilience and continued reinvention of RSS has shown just how creative the web community can be with open protocols.

Tags: #metablogging #rss #web #webdev

JSON-LD Explained for Personal Websites | Ethan Hawksley

JSON-LD, also known as JSON Linked Data, is a format for adding structured data to webpages. It can aid web crawlers in understanding the semantic structure of your site, qualifying you for richer link previews, and even potentially improving your search ranking.

Tags: #blogging #jsonld #metablogging #webdev

How to manage this Hugo based page from my Android phone in 2026 | foosel.net

I recently got a new phone and thus had to re-do the setup of my mobile blogging pipeline. So, basically, allow me to checkout, modify, test, commit and push the sources of this Hugo based static page under Android. While doing so I noticed some necessary changes and improvements, and also wanted to make use of my Taskfile which does most of the heavy lifting now, so here are my updated steps.

Tags: #android #blogging #metablogging #writing

Password Protecting Static Site Content with WASM

I use static site generators for my sites. I call out to external APIs to do anything dynamic. The exception is password protection. I'd always thought that needed to be done dynamically on a site's host server. I realized with WASM that's not the case. Files can be encrypted and served statically with a WASM process providing decryption directly on the front end.

Tags: #metablogging #security #ssg #static #wasm #webdev

Fully Local Code Embeds | Aleksandr Hovhannisyan

A few years ago, I was looking for a way to add interactive code sandboxes to my Markdown files without embedding third-party iframes, like the ones from Codepen or Codesandbox. Those services are great and I use them all the time to share demos, but I’ve never been a fan of using them on a blog since you have to jump back and forth between your local Markdown file and an external site to make changes to the demos. Plus, they typically load lots of JavaScript.

Tags: #metablogging #webcomponents #webdev

As an actor or author you don’t send your body or stunt double to attend interviews or sell autographs at comic con. Don’t create a virtual double that posts for you on social media when you can’t be arsed or feel overwhelmed. Take that overwhelming feeling and write about it, showing the world that your mental health is as fragile as the one of the people who follow you and read your work. Be human and only there when you can be there.

Tags: #ai #metablogging #socialmedia #writing
