Magpie is a visual livecoding tool made in Picotron. You can play with it online in the browser right here, download a binary to run on your computer, or load it up inside your Picotron OS via the BBS.

You can use Magpie to make interesting visual effects, and then instantly execute it and show the results on the screen.

Tags: #livecoding #picotron

Live coding – an interview with Lizzie Wilson (Digital Selves) - Music Hackspace

The live coding scene has been growing over the years. Despite this, for many the idea of watching someone create music in code might not have an immediate appeal, though live coders are now playing at top night clubs, experimental music venues, and festivals. As the world becomes more code literate it is likely to become more popular.

Tags: #demoscene #livecoding #music

Lizzie Wilson Research Page

My thesis explores the integration of autonomous agents into live coding systems to co-create music with human performers based on affective response, aiming to enhance musical expression and collaboration between humans and machines. By developing prototypes and conducting experiments, the studies conducted demonstrate that autonomous agents can facilitate the emergence of new musical ideas and patterns. The research outlines the creation of an Affective Live Coding Autonomous Agent (ALCAA) and a Markovian Agent for code generation (that leverages Haskell's strictly typed system) named Tidal Fuzz, which together form a hybrid system combining affective and computational models for generating expressive music through code manipulation. The thesis also proposes modifications the Consensual Assessment Technique for live coders, as a means of evaluating the creative outcomes of this collaborative process, acknowledging the subjective nature of creativity and ensuring nuanced evaluation.

Tags: #ai #cyborgs #livecoding #music

Live coding sucks | Mustapha Hadid

The engineer who froze during a 30-minute LeetCode exercise might be the same person who quietly ships flawless code, writes excellent docs, and debugs complex systems. You’re not rejecting a bad engineer, you’re rejecting someone who doesn’t perform well while being watched.

Tags: #career #interviews #livecoding #psychology #stress #work

Graphics livecoding in Common Lisp

Some Lisps, like Common Lisp, have a powerful feature that tends to go underappreciated amidst all the talk about macros: the ability to recompile your program while it's running, without restarting it. For the purposes of this post, and because it sounds cool, let's call this ability livecoding

Tags: #graphics #lisp #livecoding

wrightwriter/Bonzomatic-Compute: Live shader coding tool and Shader Showdown workhorse

This is a live-coding tool, where you can write a 2D fragment/pixel shader while it is running in the background. It's a fork of Bonzomatic that add network communication (WebSocket Server). The goal is to send a shader as text across a network and receive it somewhere else for display. The shader is send when you ask for compilation (ctrl+r) and also at regular updates (interval can be set in config.json) Bonzomatic can be launched as "sender" or as "grabber" if you want to send your shader or visualize a distant shader.

Tags: #coding #demoscene #diy #graphics #hacks #livecoding
