Saying goodbye to asm.js | SpiderMonkey JavaScript/WebAssembly Engine

asm.js was Mozilla’s response to the question posed by NaCl and PNaCl: how can the web run code at native speeds?

The idea was clever: pick a strict, statically-typed subset of JavaScript that an engine could recognize on the fly and compile down to native code. We could get performance similar to NaCl/PNaCl and still have code live inside web content and use web API’s (no separate sandbox, IPC, or alternative API’s).

asm.js shipped in Firefox 22 back in 2013 and was a success. It let projects like Unity and Unreal ship C/C++ codebases to the web for the first time, using just standard web technologies. The Epic Citadel demo was ported to the web in just four days. It was a landmark achievement, and a fond memory for the original asm.js team.

Tags: #asmjs #firefox #javascript #mozilla #wasm

FAQ | TinyBase

TinyBase is well suited for JavaScript applications where you need to manage structured data, such as those that have multiple 'records' to represent many of one type of object that might share fields. For example, in a Todo app, you can imagine using a Row in a Table for each todo. TinyBase makes it easy to set, get, respond to, and enumerate over this data and build user interfaces with it.

Tags: #javascript #tinybase #webdev

In 1995, a Netscape employee wrote a hack in 10 days that now runs the Internet - Ars Technica

The 10-day creation story has become programming folklore, but even with that kernel of truth we mentioned, it tends to oversimplify the timeline. Eich’s sprint produced a working demo, not a finished language, and over the next year, Netscape continued tweaking the design. The rushed development left JavaScript with quirks and inconsistencies that developers still complain about today. So many changes were coming down the pipeline, in fact, that it began to annoy one of the industry’s most prominent figures at the time.

Tags: #javascript #netscape #web #webdev

Going build-free with native JavaScript modules | Weblog | Django

Modern CSS supports many of the features natively that the build tools were created for. CSS nesting to organize code, variables, @supports for feature detection.
JavaScript ES6 / ES2015 was a big step forward, and the language has been progressing steadily ever since. It now has native module support with the import / export keywords
Meanwhile, with HTTP/2 performance improvements, parallel requests can be made over the same connection, removing the constraints of the HTTP/1.x protocol.

Tags: #django #javascript #tools #webdev

"Bookmarklets" are an underutilized and frankly little-known feature in Chrome and Firefox (and probably most other browsers too) that allows you to create a bookmark that contains a little bit of JavaScript instead of a link to a web page.

Tags: #bookmarklets #bookmarks #javascript #web

What if you could add PostScript code just into your HTML code and forget about all the JavasScript?

I like writing Javascript without a build system and for the millionth time yesterday I ran into a problem where I needed to figure out how to import a Javascript library in my code without using a build system, and it took FOREVER to figure out how to import it because the library’s setup instructions assume that you’re using a build system.

Tags: #javascript #webdev

Why would anyone need JavaScript generator functions?

Generators are an odd part of the JavaScript language. And some people find them a bit of a puzzle. You might be a successful developer for decades and never feel the need to reach for them. Which raises the question, if you can go so long without ever needing them, what are they good for?

Tags: #generators #javascript #webdev
