The Rise of the Geek Lobby

In a time of legislative gridlock, the Stop Online Piracy Act looked like a rare bipartisan breakthrough. The bill, known as SOPA, promised a brave new Internet—one cleansed of “rogue websites” that hawk pirated songs and movies as well as counterfeit goods. For Congress, the legislation’s goals...

Tags: #geek #lobby #politics #sopa

Emoticons and Smileys on PLATO in the 1970s

"How were these things done? Well, on PLATO, you could press SHIFT-space to move your cursor back one space -- and then if you typed another character, it would appear on top of the existing character. And if you wanted to get real fancy, you could use the MICRO and SUB and SUPER keys on a PLATO keyboard to move up and down one pixel or more -- in effect providing a HUGE array of possible emoticon characters. So if you typed "W" then SHIFT-space then "O" then SHIFT-space then "B", "T", "A", "X", all with SHIFT-spaces in between, all those characters would plot on top of each other, and the result would be the smiley as shown above in the "WOBTAX" example. "

Tags: #computer #design #emoticons #geek #history #nostalgia #plato

"There are some things in this world that will never be forgotten, this week’s 40th anniversary of the moon landing for one. But Moore’s Law and our ever-increasing quest for simpler, smaller, faster and better widgets and thingamabobs will always ensure that some of the technology we grew up with will not be passed down the line to the next generation of geeks."

Tags: #culture #geek #generations #genx #history #parenting #technology

Sliders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What scifi show hasn't FOX screwed with? "The FOX Network aired the episodes in a different order to best capitalize on potential ratings-winning episodes, thus causing some continuity errors. For instance, the timer is first set to count down not in the pilot episode, but in "Summer of Love" — since FOX aired "Fever" after the pilot episode, though, many viewers were left confused as to why the Sliders suddenly had to leave within a very specific period of time. Similarly, the cliffhanger at the end of "Summer of Love" leads directly into the opening of "Prince of Wails" — which FOX had actually aired a week earlier"

Tags: #fox #geek #scifi #sliders #wikipedia

"0. There are no paradoxes.1. Traveling into the future is easy.2. Traveling into the past is hard — but maybe not impossible.3. Traveling through time is like traveling through space.4. Things that travel together, age together.5. Black holes are not time machines.6. If something happened, it happened.7. There is no meta-time.8. You can’t travel back to before the time machine was built.9. Unless you go to a parallel universe.10. And even then, your old universe is still there."

Tags: #geek #science #timetravel

The diskette that blew Trixter’s mind « Oldskooler Ramblings

"The manual for Mental Blocks claims that, for both C64 and IBM, you put the diskette in label-side up. I thought that had to be a typo, since every single mixed C64/IBM or Apple/IBM diskette I have ever seen is a “flippy” disk where one side is IBM and the other side is C64 or Apple — until I looked at the FAT12 for the disk and saw that tons of sectors in an interleaved pattern were marked as BAD — very strange usage."

Tags: #badsectors #c64 #commodore #disks #filesystems #gaming #geek #hacks #ibm #pc #retro #vintage
