The DRM graveyard: A brief history of digital rights management in music | opensource.com

There are more than a few reasons digital rights management (DRM) has been largely unsuccessful. But the easiest way to explain to a consumer why DRM doesn't work is to put it in terms he understands: "What happens to the music you paid for if that company changes its mind?" It was one thing when it was a theoretical question. Now it's a historical one. Rhapsody just had the next in a line of DRM music services to go--this week the company told its users than anyone with RAX files has unil November 7 to back them up in another format or lose them the next time they upgrade their systems.

Tags: #drm #failure #googlereader #ifttt #music

Op-Ed Columnist - An Absence of Class in the G.O.P. - NYTimes.com

"For decades the G.O.P. has been the party of fear, ignorance and divisiveness. All you have to do is look around to see what it has done to the country. The greatest economic inequality since the Gilded Age was followed by a near-total collapse of the overall economy. As a country, we have a monumental mess on our hands and still the Republicans have nothing to offer in the way of a remedy except more tax cuts for the rich."

Tags: #america #conservatives #failure #gop #politics #republicans #teabaggers

"There should be a clear distinction in public policy between the requirement for essential activities to survive and the continued existence of particular companies engaged in their provision."

Tags: #capitalism #democracy #economics #failure #infrastructure #monopoly #socialism #toobigtofail

Bob Sutton: The Auto Industry Bailout: Thoughts About Why GM Executives Are Clueless And Their Destructive “No We Can’t” Mindset

"In short, my view is that if GM can’t figure out ways to get their managers and executives to understand the experience of owning a car for the average person, if they can’t get rid of those jets, and if they can’t reduce the number of brands, and if they can’t make a host of other changes required to make them competitive, than my answer is “no, you can’t have our money.” "

Tags: #automotive #autos #bailout #business #detroit #economy #failure #gm #industry #michigan #strategy

"President Bush was hired to know more than the people, to be told all the deep inside intelligence, all the facts Americans are not told, and do the right and smart thing in response."

Tags: #bush #failure #politics

"It's been five years since the anthrax attacks shook our country and took the lives of five Americans. We cannot permit another five to pass before we close this chapter and prepare for the next one."

Tags: #anthrax #failure #politics #republicans #terror #war

"O'Beirne's staff posed blunt questions to some candidates about domestic politics: Did you vote for George W. Bush in 2000?
