Server-Sent Events Beat WebSockets for 95% of Real-Time Apps (Here's Why) - DEV Community

Everyone defaults to WebSockets for real-time features. Most shouldn't.

The reality: 95% of "real-time" applications only need server → client updates. Chat notifications. Live dashboards. Stock tickers. Log streams. AI responses.

WebSockets give you bidirectional communication. But bidirectional comes with a tax: complexity, resource overhead, scaling challenges, debugging nightmares.

Server-Sent Events (SSE) do one thing: stream data from server to client. They do it brilliantly. And for most applications, that's all you need.

Tags: #events #http #pubsub #sse #webdev

Using PostgreSQL as a Dead Letter Queue for Event-Driven Systems — Blog

The goal was never to replace Kafka with PostgreSQL. Kafka remained the backbone for high-throughput event ingestion, while PostgreSQL handled what it does best—durability, querying, and observability around failures. By letting each system play to its strengths, we ended up with a pipeline that was resilient, debuggable, and easy to operate.

In the end, using PostgreSQL as a Dead Letter Queue turned failure handling into something boring and predictable. And in production systems, boring is exactly what you want.

Tags: #db #events #kafka #postgresql

The way we got to this point, this place where we’re all friends and don’t tolerate sexist and homophobic behavior, is in no small part thanks to booze. If we want to continue to expand this community and make the rest of the world a more tolerant place we’ll have to continue to value the personal over the professional.

Tags: #booze #community #events #imported:pinboard #tech #to:fb

"jQuery 1.4.2 added a set of new functions: $.delegate() and $.undelegate(). $.delegate() is a hybrid between $.bind() and $.live(). Here is an example of how the three functions differ, and how to implement $.delegate() in existing code."

Tags: #eventdelegation #events #javascript #jquery #webdev

NIGHT AND DAY: Ann Arbor Ignites (but lacks space to innovative)

"I would think that Ann Arbor would be a little embarrassed that it doesn't provide an open and affordable arts and cultural center for its citizens. Even Ypsilanti, which is one fifth our size has managed to create the Riverside Arts Center, which has both a gallery and theater for public use."

Tags: #annarbor #culture #events #spaces
