Kentucky’s Bourbon problem

I don't know how they're going to correct for the market crash they've seen in the past couple of years. The bourbon bubble seems like it has completely burst and it will be interesting to watch the effects on Kentucky's economy in the years to come as millions of barrels of bourbon no one wants can't be sold to make up for all the energy and capital that went into them.

Tags: #ai #booze #bourbon #llms

Kachka’s New Distillery and Dumpling Factory Is in Production Mode - Portland Mercury

Fabrika opened in July in the Bindery Annex building with seasonal cocktails and a seafood-forward menu. Kachka beverage director and head distiller Jamie Bones created a list of six original martinis for the bar, from a non-alcoholic martini to a nod to Scandinavian culture with dill aquavit and their version of an espresso martini (birch vodka, Kahlua, instant coffee, coffee condensed milk, with a chicory molasses swirl). As one would expect from a vodka-centric bar, the martinis are all ICE. COLD.

Tags: #booze #cocktails #food #pdx #restaurants

The little-told story of how the U.S. government poisoned alcohol during Prohibition.

Frustrated that people continued to consume so much alcohol even after it was banned, federal officials had decided to try a different kind of enforcement. They ordered the poisoning of industrial alcohols manufactured in the United States, products regularly stolen by bootleggers and resold as drinkable spirits. The idea was to scare people into giving up illicit drinking. Instead, by the time Prohibition ended in 1933, the federal poisoning program, by some estimates, had killed at least 10,000 people.

Tags: #alcohol #booze #imported:pinboard #prohibition

Mastering the Margarita - WSJ.com

Like any other drink, it is only as good as its worst ingredient. Fortunately, the basic margarita only has three: tequila, triple sec and lime juice. Choose a spirit made of 100% agave, stock your bar with a solid orange-flavored liqueur, squeeze fresh lime juice—think of how strong your forearms will get!—and nail the proportions and you'll have a wonderfully balanced sweet, tangy, slightly earthy (that's the 100% agave) drink to sip this Cinco de Mayo and throughout the summer.

Tags: #alcohol #booze #drinks #imported:pinboard #margaritas #tequila
