How building an HTML-first site doubled our users overnight

It is not acceptable to bounce users on old browsers, users with bad network connections, users using assistive technologies. Certainly not from a monopoly public service. A lot of hype and noise is pressing us to extend the cowboy, wild-west phase of the software industry’s expansion. We should set that aside, and take ourselves seriously as a mature industry. Build a web application that works on a playstation portable on a 3G connection - if you do, it will work for all your users, and it will still work 30 years from now.

Tags: #accessibility #html #webcomponents #webdev

"Yes, you read correctly: An accessible touch screen device! This morning, I went to a retail store carrying mostly Apple products and had a look at the new iPhone 3G S that was released in Germany on Friday. "

Tags: #accessibility #apple #iphone #mobile #touchscreen

Accessibility is a harsh mistress [dive into mark]

"When I was an accessibility architect at IBM, I assisted in the final stages of ensuring that Eclipse’s Graphical Editing Framework was fully accessible to blind people. ... During one particularly difficult teleconference, an Eclipse developer muttered something like, “You realize no one is ever actually going to do any of this, right?” There was an awkward silence as the people who had spent their lives in the trenches of access enablement contemplated the very real possibility that no one would ever benefit from their work."

Tags: #accessibility #graphics #svg #webdev

"PS: Try searching for quadriplegic and computers. It's a hint. Amazing progress has been made in making computers accessible to people with disabilities.
