Microsoft Comic Chat is now open source | Microsoft Open Source Blog

Today, we’re excited to announce the open-source release of Microsoft Comic Chat, the chat client that automatically turned conversations within Internet Relay Chat (IRC) into comic panels featuring illustrated characters, speech bubbles, and expressions, and helped introduce the world to a little font called Comic Sans.

Tags: #MSFT #comicchat #irc #jerkcity

World historic amounts of gamedev talent thrown out to rot – Laura Michet's Blog

There is a never-before-seen glut of experienced, highly senior talent just lying around right now, like cuts of meat someone threw out of the fridge to rot on the floor of the restaurant. Game dev teams don't get birthed as fully-formed agglomerations of talent... it takes years for them to come together as effective creative communities and start making material they can be proud of. So we're looking at an industry that's not only hemorrhaging talent, but also hemorrhaging the interpersonal trust and momentum you need to make good games.

Tags: #MSFT #gaming #sony

GitHub is sinking – David Bushell – Web Dev (UK)

GitHub is racing towards the mythical zero nines of uptime. Users are starting to notice that GitHub is now a Microsoft product. Eww!

Official uptime paints a concerning chart. The missing status page tell a far worse story. Whatever the truth, it’s impossible to miss the delightful experience that is Microsoft GitHub if you use it semi-regularly.

Tags: #MSFT #git #github

But... FrontPage as a concept. As a dream of what could have been, and a window into what was. Letting the typical home user at the time create websites, express creativity, and conquer the world by storm, all without being forced to learn HTML or CSS or JavaScript... In that regard, FrontPage couldn't be beat.

Tags: #MSFT #frontpage #webdev

The Internet Explorer process on W8ARM has special privileges and is the only one allowed to run a JIT compiler to speed up JavaScript. No other browser will be able to compete on performance with IE on W8ARM. That sure simplifies keeping up with the competition ... ;-)

Tags: #MSFT #browsers #imported:pinboard #jit #microsoft #windows

The end of an era: Internet Explorer drops below 50% of Web usage

A couple of interesting things happened in the world of Web browser usage during October. The more significant one is that Internet Explorer's share of global browser usage dropped below 50 percent for the first time in more than a decade. Less significant, but also notable, is that Chrome for the first time overtook Firefox here at Ars, making it the technologist's browser of choice.

Tags: #MSFT #browsers #chrome #firefox #msie #webdev

2011: The Year of Firefox - or of Chrome? - Open Enterprise

"I see no reason why Chrome won't rise to above 20% in the short term. This means, of course, that the market share of Firefox and Internet Explorer will continue to drop. But as I noted some time back, this really isn't a huge problem for Firefox - although it is for Microsoft. The reason is quite simple: Firefox was never aiming at world domination, it was fighting to create an open Web where no browser held such a dominant position that it could ignore open standards and impose de facto ones instead. We pretty much have that now, with Internet Explorer increasingly standards-compliant - and proud of it, amazingly."

Tags: #MSFT #browsers #chrome #firefox #mozilla #msie #web #webdev
